West Virginia

WVU lived up to their billing. They are a poor 3-pt shooting team and they can't make free throws. Hope they don't improve by the time we have to go to their house to play.

Is this a turning point? Can we take this win into confrence play and play really well? I hope so. Whatever Sherri did today, keep on doing it.

Interesting. The better team won. It was that simple. They only had one player who could play with us today.

Outstanding day for Gioya. After a silent first half, Kay Kay was outstanding in the second half. Has Kay Kay been that good this year? She rebounded, shot intelligently, blocked shots, and played smart in the second half. Sharane was back to her old form in the second half. Until the last two minutes, T'Ona really played well. Her defense was good, and she was four of five on her layups.

Peyton didn't do well dribbling the entire game. She did make a nice assist at the end to help us put it away. She hit her free throws, three of four.

We may be looking for different players every game to take the lead. Fortunately, we seem to have them. We were just better than WV, and I wasn't sure of that going in. We even won the board battle.

KayKay can be good we have seen it multipule times this season. I wish she would be consistently good all the time. That would be huge for us!

Some of us feel the need to show how much we know about WBB.

Great game Sooners!

I'm a fan of Sherri Coale, but what happened today at the LNC had less to do with SC and more to do with the OU players.

I think we did turn a bit of a corner. But, I wonder if we didn't turn it before the game. WV, for example, had a very soft schedule. We have played some big time games. I think it showed. I don't know how good we are, but we are probably a bit better than the typical 7-5 team. Given what I've seen of the Big Twelve in games, I haven't seen anyone any better. Baylor and Texas have been good in stretches of games. So have we. We've had more games where the bad stretches could cost you.

We need for her to be really good for the team to be successful and you're right, we need to see that consistently. Sometimes it seems it is just hard for her to get going but I thought tonight when she made up her mind to get after it, she was huge in the win.

No doubt the bad stretch we had late in the first half could have been disastrous against teams like Texas or Baylor. But we were good enough today to overcome a few minutes of poor play against WVU.

Kornet only played 9 minutes. Anyone know if she was feeling bad?

Props to the team for a good win to start big 12 play.
If Carter can bring that athleticism (we keep talking about that weakness for OU),
then she can really help this team.

I wish that Cox, Johnson, and Wilson would have been at the game today.

I wish Kornet would have played more.....She is so good...Why is she on the bench???

Something about this game has got me excited. We looked confident, we rebounded better. We were smart with the ball.

I thought we had the better athletes. They had more experience with 7 juniors and seniors. We had the talent.

While I am excited over the performances of Gioya, Kay Kay, and Sharane today, what really gave me hope was that we played Vivi, T'Ona, LaNesia, Gioya, and Peyton with the game on the line for the last few minutes, subbing in Kay Kay with about two minutes left. We had two freshmen and three sophomores at crunch time.

Was Wyatt sick? Or she may not be in our plans for this year. I am as perlexed as some of the rest of you about Kornet not getting any more playing time. I kept thinking she would sub in for Little the second half.

I thought the exact same thing. It seems strange she was held out as much as she was today.

I did notice that the announcers indicated that she had left Holmes too wide open a couple of times, allowing Holmes to get started. But, when you get a group going well, you may not want to break it up except to prevent fatigue. Kornet came in for Carter. But, today, did you want Carter to leave the floor? It looked like we were trying to keep:

Vivi or Kay Kay
Sharane
Gioya
T'Ona or Gabbi
Little or LaNesia

on the floor. Kornet seemed to be in the rotation for Gioya. I don't know where you fit Derica in today's mix. We even had McKenna and Vivi for Kay Kay and Sharane in the first half.

Defensive rebounding late in the game was tremendous. Especially by Gioya and especially out of the zone.

I don't know if West Virginia just isn't any good offensively, but we looked a lot more active in the zone. Probably won't be able to rebound like that against better competition, but still a positive. I felt like we covered the entire floor much better & the gaps weren't as big as when we have played zone at other times during the year.

There is no doubt that I have been critical of this team and some of the coaching decisions in the first "third" of the season. I have to thank several of our posters who constantly remind us that for the most part we are playing a bunch of Freshmen and Sophomores, going against some good veteran teams. With the exception of the second half against Duke, our youngsters have played with grit and determination, and with a few lucky breaks, could have three more wins under their belts.

With that being said, I got to see probably the best performance as a team, since the Washington game. I liked what Sherri said in her post game. This team would ride a wave to its crest, on the verge of breaking the game open, only to struggle on multiple possessions. The first 16 mins. the kids only committed 4 turnovers, the next 10 they had 10. Silly bounce passes at team mates feet, or passes into traffic. Yet, against a veteran opponent, the kids did not wilt. At crucial times, we made plays. When WV had a break away lay up, we didn't do any thing stupid to give them free throws. Kaylon played with foul trouble and defended well and played smart from getting that fifth foul. Gioya played how I have always hoped she would, and now looks comfortable on the floor. Gabbi ran the floor well in spite of her six turnovers.

I did not understand the limiting of Nicole's minutes. I thought she inspired when was in and played well. That may be part of Sherri's weakness of substituting, but it worked out well. We have all talked about it, but Sherri really does have several options to go to if players struggle. It worked out well with T'ona, LaNesia, McKenna, ViVi, and Maddie in the mix. This young team will have its struggles in conference play, but I really liked what I saw from the kids today. When West Virgina came out and roared back into the lead after half time, the kids did not back down. They locked down defensively, rebounded with authority and closed out a hard fought game. If they can build on these last two games, and continue to play a hard forty minutes Weds. and Saturday, they could be looking at 3-0 with the Horns coming to town. A tough assignment, but I wouldn't bet against them. Today was a fun game to be a part of with the best crowd of the season.

I was one who was skeptical of this game today, but if the kids can keep improving, they have the potential to be the third best team in the conference. Its going to be an interesting ride.
