Westmoore back to best

MIDWEST CITY — The Westmoore girls were in disarray a week ago.
After starting the season 8-2, they had lost back-to-back games at home, including a disappointing performance against Edmond Memorial. In those defeats, the team had a feel of becoming the Jessi Murcer show. The junior guard and Oklahoma commit looked like the only offensive weapon for a team that had aspirations for returning to the state tournament. Sliding to No. 9 in the rankings, the Jaguars didn’t want to panic but knew they needed something to change.

“We are a really young team,” Murcer said on Monday. “We just have to go out confident, trusting in each other.”

At the end of the week, Westmoore looked like it couldn’t lose, going 3-0 to win the Carl Albert Titan Classic. The signature victory came against Midwest City, 51-39, on Saturday to clinch first place. Murcer scored 29 and finished with 87 total in the tournament, including a school record 42 against Carl Albert.

The Jaguars looked composed offensively, instead forcing it into her hands and hoping she would make something happen. Defensively, they played like a unit, with every player pressuring their man and boxing out on rebounds.
No player showed more improvement than Jessi’s younger sister, Kristen. The sophomore point guard nearly had a triple-double, 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, in the win over Del City, and had the ball in her hands for most of the tournament.

“A lot of people say that Westmoore only has one player,” Kristen Murcer said. “I want to show them that we’re a team and that we have a lot of great players to contribute.”
