What if OSU hired ... Doug Gottlieb

You know who else this described before they were hired? Fred Hoiberg. And he's doing just fine.

Maybe Gottleib would be great, or maybe he wouldn't, but I'm not worried about his "lack of experience."

I have no idea if he would even want the job... it seems like he has a pretty sweet gig.... but if we can't get my #1 choice (Greg Marshall), then I wouldn't mind giving Gottleib a shot. The dude is a walking basketball encyclopedia... I think he could make a good coach.

It can't be worse than what we have right now.

The difference here is Hoiberg played 10 years in the NBA, and then joined an NBA staff immediately after. One of the main reasons he was hired was due to all he had learned at the highest level at basketball. If you watch his games you can see evidence of this everywhere.

One of the main things you can pick up on, is his team has one of the highest offensive efficiencies out of timeouts, as in he pretty much always has a set play that will work and who to go to. It's a bunch of little things like this that make his in game coaching really impressive.

Now having his connection to ISU obviously makes it easier to sell his passion while recruiting, that Gottlieb would share, but by no means do their post college days resemble one another in comparing their potential as coaches.

I actually don't think Doug would be that bad, but the Mayor has more experience and NBA reputation (as a player and in the front office) than Doug does. With that said, it's not like Doug is foreign to coaching...his brother (assistant at Cal) and father (AAU icon in California) are both coaches. I was on the Gregg Marshall train HARD a few years ago when the OU job was opening up, really hope OSU doesn't land him.

Agree. Desmond Mason would be a better choice than Gottlieb.

Greg Marshall is an interesting case. He's kind of an "east coast" guy, but he's smack in the middle of Big 12 country right now.

"East coast" is a stretch.

He's from South Carolina and was coaching at Winthrop (in South Carolina) before taking the job at Wichita State. And he went to college in Virginia.

Is it on the east coast? Technically, yes. But come on, we all know what "East Coast Guy" means. He's a Southerner.

...

Yea, but Hoiberg was known as The Mayor, while Gottlieb was known as The dweeb.

From my POV as an OU fan, Doug would be an excellent choice for OSU!!

Yeah - probably more "eastern seaboard."

My point was that he's not necessarily someone who has roots in "Big 12 country."
