When is a win good enough?

Geez, it'd be nice to read the game thread during a game, but as soon as the team hits a rough patch (which happens to most teams in most games), it's meltdown city. The ratio of negative posts to positive in today's game thread is really amazing, considering we led most of the game and won by double digits.

I thought today was a great win. Dayton is a quality team and we were only favored by four. I'm very happy with the victory. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But nothing that justifies F words in the game thread and insulting our coach.

Couldn't agree more!! Double digit win against a good team, in a game where we outplayed them for probably 25 minutes. I get as nervous and frustrated as anyone during bad stretches in games, but I'm at least smart enough not to post all my stupid overreactions for the world to see! :)

Oh, I do too. But I've been watching sports long enough to know that I'm just panicking, even though being down 5 or 6 points early in the second half is hardly reason to panic. And also that the coaches and players want to win even more than I want them to, so me freaking out that early is just silly.

And also, the day I can only post negative crap and not come up with a positive word, even after the team overcomes that 5 or 6 point deficit that inspired me to behave like an ass, or, worse, even after the team wins by double digits, I invite you to call me on it.

I thought the win was good enough.

I have some opinions on this particular tournament, but the win was good. Got out of it with wins over Dayton and Florida. That's a success, but the tournament was lame.

There were probably 1,000 people in that gym today. Again, I'd rather have more games than play in crap like this. At least the community in Norman gets to come watch them play.

I dunno. 3 games in 3 days against decent teams is good experience. Letting the guys spend some time in the Bahamas is also a nice reward for them. I was there over Christmas last year. Nice place!

And as to the thread title, yes, I am very happy for this win.

This was a VERY good win!

To be honest, after watching the Dayton/Wisconsin game yesterday, I wasn’t sure we could beat Dayton. When the Flyers came back and took a lead, I thought we were in trouble. This team showed me something today! They’re tougher mentally than I thought, and they won the game with defense.

I think you have to take these Holiday tournament sites/low attendance with a grain of salt. I've always enjoyed these Thanksgiving games at a neutral site. It's positive for me because you tend to find out a lot about your team early in the season from a mental standpoint. You see how they well that play or don't play away from home against decent to good competition. Also, with the variety of teams/styles that you see, your weaknesses tend to get exposed and it gives you film to work on improvements (i.e. today we stunk against their 1-3-1 and it's something we need to work on because it's now likely we are going to be seeing more junk defenses).

The other positive is that if you have a successful tournament (2-1 or better), then it really helps the perception of your team.....and more importantly, it helps your analytics/metrics to win on a neutral court (i.e. RPI and Kenpom).

It's a reward for the team and they are the ones spilling their guts on the floor, so it is what is is.

The team went 2-1 on a neutral court against at least teams who'll be in the NCAA tournament. That's a really good days, in my view, and the players got to be on ESPN 3 times, got a trip to the Bahamas & got to stay at Atlantis. Experiences like these make for great recruiting tools.

Re: Whining

I think most of us let what is happening in the moment to blur the reality of the total game. I remember in the Dayton game thinking that we just couldn't defend the three point line. Dayton shot only 25% from there for the game. That is how emotion can overcome good judgment.

I coached basketball in the military, in middle school and high school in Oklahoma for a number of years. Consequently I probably overanalyze the game. A forced shot early in the clock, failure to block out on rebounds, not rotating on defense to protect the basket, etc. will cause a quick reaction from me.

But if I ever use profanity toward our players and coaches, claim they are stupid, don't work, never practice free shots or otherwise insult them I hope you call me out.

Any player who has reached the Div I level has worked hard to get there and has to work hard to stay at that level. There is just too much competition for other than the very elite talents to even make a school team without hard work. My granddaughter is in the 7th grade in a Dallas metro area middle school. She had not played before and made the B team for the 7th grade inspite of the fact that over 100 girls were trying out for the 3 7th grade teams. In that area they have A, B, and C teams for every middle school grade. In North Carolina there is one team of usually 12 girls vs the 108 that are playing middle school ball in Texas. Wonder why they turn out turn out so many good athletes in that state?

Anyway the point is that however good it is that my granddaughter made the B team in her first effort to play the game she will have to practice countless hours to continue to play the game.

I never post on game threads or even follow them until after the game. As irrational as my thoughts are during the fray, I have no interest in exposiing how irrational I can be to the whole world. Yes there is a ton of whining in game threads but the line is crossed when personal insults and profanity is directed to the players and even the coaches.

Any win is enough..why wouldn't it be?

Is that you, Inoref, or did somebody hijack your account? ;)

I agree, there is no such thing as a bad win. We may not always approve of the way the game is played. But every win, regardless of the score, should be enough to make fans of the winning team happy.

Yes, that is what inspired me to start this thread. There were posts just as you describe during yesterday's game. To me, such posts are inexcusable.

Or you could just let people be fans and support the team in their own way?

Don't like the negative comments, either don't read them (if it's an entire thread) or block the poster.

Same people on this board objecting to the negatively are the ones I see trashing the football team for their defense, and calling for it to now be "basketball season" once they lose a game.

Everybody supports differently, and wants something different from the program. Posts like this only divide.

I coached high school basketball for years and I am way too critical for my own good when I watch games.

I see all the little things that OU doesn't do and get ticked (even when they do something wrong and it works out). I seldom think of the good things because that's what they are supposed to do.

Once a coach, always a coach. It's the way coaches operate or at least in my case.

A guy posting "F U Lon Kruger" and "Eff this team" -- when we're trailing by single digits with plenty of time remaining, by the way -- is supporting the team, while I'm being divisive.

Gotcha.

Sky, if it makes you feel any better, that guy is not here anymore and he won’t be back.
