Why can't Sherri get to the scholarship limit?

FWIW, OSU only has 11 girls on the roster and one of them is out with an injury so they are practicing/suiting up with 10 right now.

#2 UConn has a roster of 11 as well. Having a full roster is really an exception, rather than the rule for whatever reason.

We currently have 12 players on scholarships! While a coach might expect to see a couple have injury problems I don't think anyone would plan on losing 4 in one year! I never saw much from Jeffcoat although I thought Zander had potential, but, I do not know what the other issues were.(we never know in the women's program). More than 12-13 seems to me is probably a waste of a scholarship unless you are a Ucon where someone would be more likely to take a redshirt to play a year later. Talented players want to play NOW.

I think we had four last year at one time. At the KU game Zander, Jaz, Cloman, and Jo were all out.

About 10 years ago she accepted a girl from Southern Nazarene (I believe they were a NAIA school at the time). Her first name I think was Teresa and the last name starts with an S but I can't spell it. There may have been one or two others but not many.

Thanks Norm I think Sherri should start looking at more girls who are planing on transferring out of the school there at now. if we could get a D1 quality girl and have her practice with the team for a year I'm sure it wouldn't hurt a thing Especially if were not filling out the roster.

I bet Sherri has thought of everything from a time machine to guys with high voices and long hair. Mac has a good point though, this season is becoming set in stone (I don't have the slightest idea how it will turn out but the permutations and combinations keep getting reduced by orders of magnitude.) Today or tomorrow it would help to increase practice players who are actually practicing in preparation to playing in the future.

Isn't Cerina still at OU in grad school? Could she practice with the squad like the men do under NCAA regulations?

Could Sherri put out the call for warm bodies by holding tryouts for walk-ons?

Sherri has never really used the depth she has. Will go 7-8 deep at the most. With the male practce squad she is OK there. If you notice she really cuts back on Kornet and Portia when she is in a tight game. So I don't think she needs more than 9 or 10. Eight is a little tight so if we get another injury we will be challenged.

You see a lot of teams using 9 or 10 even in the tight games. The pace of the game sort of dictates more depth. But for the most part our women usually hold up well with the long minutes. Hard to tell if their effectiveness drops off late in the game. Too early to tell this season.

Literature seems to suggest link between leg fatigue and ACL occurrence. To early to tell indeed.

What we need isn't just more players...we can get more bottom of the roster level players if we want....but those aren't the level of players needed to win at the top 10 level. We need more difference making players...but frankly everyone except the top 4 or so teams in the country is in that situation.

I have read somewhere (sorry I can't remember where) that some coaches believe that the more players you have, the harder it is to have good team chemistry. If you have 15 players and only play 8 consistently, you might have 7 that are not happy and can cause your team to have chemistry problems. I don't think any coach wants to have a team with only 8 available players, but I think most of them would rather have a team of 10 or 11 that has good chemistry rather than a team of 15 players and bad chemistry.

All 8 will have to play and play as well (or better)than they can. Makes us very thin with foul trouble, fatigue, sprained ankle, anything. A steady diet of 40 minutes will eventually wear you down. Will be interesting to see how Sherri plays them. I hope Jaz is practicing her shots.

You can attempt to justify the need for only 7 or 8 player because of who gets the minutes but what happens when 2 or 3 players get in foul trouble or one player has a minor injury that keeps her from playing for a game or two.

Rest assured as the season progresses we will experience conference games with more than one player getting 2 or more fouls early in the first half and similarly have two players in the with four fouls early in the second half.

Regardless what one wants to believe you identifing past seasons with limited players only confirms the need for Sherri to maintain a slightly large roster than 12. In all instances another quality player on the roster would allow Sherri more flexibility in managing tight games with players in foul trouble or sprained ankles, etc that restrict their quality of play.

Roster size problems are going to occur on all teams on occasion. Unfortunately it happens to too many of Sherri's teams.

Good post...looks like Sherri agrees with you.

Texas did that with Kristin Nash a couple years back. She had graduated and was done with basketball. Was attending grad school at UT. Someone got hurt or something and suddenly the horns were short on inside players. Kristin still had a year of eligibility left, was already on campus, and was a veteran longhorn player. They talked her into coming back, halfway through the season IIRC.
