Why would candidates give us the "cold shoulder"?

A media contact of mine said he's heard a lot of potential candidates are giving OU the "cold shoulder". I am guessing most of these are the folks we would consider the "splash hire", and not the mid-major coach who is wanting to move up (Marshall, Jones, etc.).

So, is it just the NCAA deal that's killing us? Or is it the fact we are a big time football program? Is it the fan support? Is it the administration (from an outsiders perspective)?

What is it?

1. NCAA issues
2. Lack of talent on campus
3. Life at a football school
4. Lack of crowd support
5. An administration not totally committed to hoops

Should I go on?

A lot of coaches/media didn't think Capel should have been fired. Maybe Coach K is using his influence to get coaches to black list OU.

Or maybe they see our roster for next year and potential NCAA sanctions and just don't think it is worth the risk.

IMHO, it is the uncertainty with the NCAA and the lack of fan support and enthusiasm for the program. I can't say I blame them. Also, the Thunder has taken away some of the OKC faction that would normally go to 75% of the home games. It's a tough sell when you're the 3rd option with Sooner fans in the Norman/OKC area.

Let's say Coach Up And Coming contacts a school and says he's interested in their open job. The school says "Thanks, but no thanks." When asked about the job, Coach Up and Coming says, "They contacted me, but I told them I wasn't interested." Unless the people at the school are complete jerks, they aren't going to comment one way or another.

If I were a media memeber, I would believe anything I heard unless I could confirm it separately. The way Joe C. runs a search, no one but OU & the coach is going to be able to confirm contact between OU and a coach and the OU folks aren't talking. You really can't believe anything you hear from the coaches.

I can give you a list of 20-25 coaches that wouldn't leave their current jobs. They have it good. No reason to leave.
That leaves about a half dozen others plus the mid majors.
I think Joe's criteria limit his pool of prospects to less than 5.

And fwiw, I don't think Buzz/Pastner gave us the "cold shoulder".
They have good or better jobs at the moment. No good reason to give them up.

Like I said on other post. The conference isnt stable.

With all due respect, this isn't the reason.

The conference may not be stable, but that won't affect us. We will be able to either go to the Pac 12, SEC, or Big 10 +2 if the conference is to break up. Any of those conferences would love to have us as any or all will try to expand to 16 teams.

Now, KU, KSU, Mizzou and ISU are all in trouble in regards to this. If this were a valid reason, then we should see it in Mizzou's candidate search.

I would go...

1. Lack of fan support
2. Life at a football school
3. NCAA issues
4. Lack of talent
5. Administration

I think everyone grossly underestimates the damage that is being done by our lame home games. It can be quite embarrassing and NO it's not Jeff Capel's fault. Even when Kelvin and Jeff had top 10 teams it was an issue. Hell OU had quite possibly the most exciting player to have come around almost ANYWHERE on it's roster yet still we saw lackluster home crowd support.

I guess technically you could move 5. Administration up to the top considering the fact that I lay total blame at the feet of the OU administration but most coaches outside the situation just see the ZERO fan support. I'm sorry but without fan support, even John Calipari would have a hard time bringing in McDonald's All American's.

Jeff will move on and prove to be an outstanding recruiter and coach if he's given a second chance somewhere which I'm sure he will. I'm still amazed that he had OU on many of the top tier kids lists year after year and imo if OU had resolved it's attendance issues before Capel's arrival, we would have signed twice as many of those prospects than we ended up signing. THAT would have made a HUGE difference when Tiny & TMG bailed like they did. We just would have plugged another talented guy in there... just like KU does, just like UNC, just like Duke, etc. etc.

Dude...please stop polluting my threads with this crap that Capel "will prove to be an outstanding recruiter and coach". He may but he probably won't because he failed miserably in Norman. He was a crappy recruiter and an even worse coach. This is why our program is in this position.

Thanks.

Being a football school doesn't hurt ohio state or florida, just another excuse. OU being under an ncaa investigation is hurting OU the most. It is one of the main reasons Capel struggled to sign top players.

Firing a coach two years after he reaches the Elite 8, deservedly or not, is not a great precendent to set.

How many years of suckage is required before it is kosher to do it??

I don't think the poster was saying it wasn't the right thing to do, but some of these coaches are probably looking at it that way...right or wrong...

NCAA problems might be involved, but don't you think escalating coach's salaries have made coach's much more comfortable were they are. If a coach is happy where he is and is being well compensated it's going to take lot to get him to give up the proverbial "bird in the hand". Not many starving coaches anymore.

Sorry but OU and Joe C do not have a rep for firing coaches.

I'm sure they can lay out the reasons for firing Capel to any prospective coaches.

I don't know but there seemed to be indicators that Capel had difficulty controlling the team. I don't have respect for Willie, TMG or Tiny but good coaches don't have problems with me first players. Jeff seemed to be a very nice person, maybe too nice.

Don't you think that we could cure for a longer term deal?

Most coaches would prolly tell you three at a minimum

Any coach that thinks it's okay to suck for three or more years needs to keep their ....where they're at.
