Have the Sooners win their next two games and be Big 12 regular season champs OR win the big 12 tourney?

I sure would like the Sooners to be the ones to end Kansas's regular season run...

There have been debates about this topic over the years... I put more stock in tournament championships because in basketball, tournaments decide championships. They don't hand out a national title trophy for the team with the best regular season record, they make them win the NCAA Tournament.
  • NIT Championship is a tournament
  • CBI Championship is a tournament
  • Pre-Season NIT is a tournament
  • NCAA Championship is a tournament
  • Olympic Gold Medal in basketball is a tournament
  • FIBA Championships are tournaments

Yet, for some reason we hand out a championship award to the team who hasn't won a tournament.

If OU wins the next two games, then OU beats Kansas and ties for the regular season conference championship. That is my first choice, by a mile.

If that happens, OU should get a very winnable game in the 1st round of the conference tournament.

Also, if OU wins the next two games, then they can have no more than 10 losses going into Selection Sunday.

Tournament. I want to see us on a high going into the tournament and playing with confidence. I don't want to limp into the NCAA tournament and end up a spectator by the weekend.

You could also say ... Yet, for some reason, we hand out a championship trophy to a team that came in 5th during the regular season.

There have always been conference champions based on the regular season. It has always been that way, even before the times of conference tournaments.

I am in the opposing camp. I would rather see a Big-12 Conference Championship banner hanging inside the LNC, as opposed to a conference tournament banner.

Of course, I would take BOTH. That would be the best outcome.

Win the regular season hands down.

I would rather get healthy before the NCAA tournament, instead of draining our energy with a deep conf tourney run which means little when it comes to seeding.

To me this is a simple problem with an obvious answer. Win the next 11 games.

Right... lots of times the team with the best regular season record doesnt win the NCAA Championship either. That is the beauty of a tournament deciding a championship.

There is no counter to the fact that all championships in basketball are decided by tournaments. Neutral floor, high stakes, tournament basketball against unfamiliar opponents.

I've never understood the OU fans that try to devalue the Big 12 regular season. That is a much more fair indicator of "success" than a tournament over a 4 day weekend.

That said, I'm still proud as heck of the Big 12 Tournaments OU has won.

I think for seeding purposes, OU winning the next two games would do more for us than winning the tournament.

That is misleading. You are comparing regular season to postseason. ALL postseason, in just about every sport on the planet, is decided by a postseason tournament. Because there is no way you could have a post season any other way, right?

But especially in the Big 12, where you play every team home and away, there is no more fair way to measure who has the best team, than our regular season. Not saying it's perfect, as scheduling, timing of injuries, etc all factor in, but it's more fair than a 4 day tournament that takes place in two teams' back yard.

The regular season is more apt to identify the best teams than an end of season tourney.

Well, then let's alert the NCAA to hand Kentucky the national championship trophy now since they will have the best record. Scrap the entire tournament to decide it.

Rather make it to the elite 8 or win big 12 regular season? I think that is where the cutoff is. Big 12 season champ means a lot. I think it shows how good your team really was.

Exactly.
In every single major sport, the regular season is used to determine seeding in the tournament that determines a champion.

The Giants won the Super Bowl as a 6 seed in 2007. Do you think the Cowboys gave a damn that they were regular season NFC Champions?

Thank you!

It's a sprint versus a marathon. I would rather win the 2-month regular season championship versus the Big 12 tournament in a span of 3-4 days. Also, KU normally has a big advantage in the tournament because they have home court 20 miles from their campus.

Some teams don't mind losing early in the conference tournament because they get to rest and work on their game plans. Playing 4 days in a row and then having a Thursday NCAA opening game can give a team tired legs.

Did I suggest that? Tournaments are fun and interesting. They declare a champion. But, if they identify the best team it is merely coincidence.

The NCAA recognizes conference tournament champions as automatic qualifiers not regular season champs. If you win the regular season and lose the post season championship, you become an at large candidate for the NCAA Tourney. I prefer being the automatic qualifying champ, but I'd still like to win both.

That's because you can't have a share of the tournament title. It would cause too many headaches to base it on the conference season.

Also how can you say Kentucky won the regular season? Did they play everybody? In the big12 you play everyone home & away, doesn't get much even than that.
