Wow, that was worse than anything Capel has thrown out there

We were embarrassed out there tonight. I was hoping the constant railroading from good teams was over, but tonight took it to a new level. I have never seen an OU team look as hapless as they did tonight, and it was flat out embarrassing to watch.

I hope that this is the exception and not the rule for the rest of the season, or it could be a long conference stretch we are looking at. I know that this season was going to be a work in progress, but an OU basketball team should never be getting abused like we did tonight.

Meh. We will be ok. Mizzou was hot and we sucked.

Oh and did u forget at tech last yea?

You cant just dismiss a 38 point beating to an off night, 87-49 is brutal. It is a pretty big red flag when we get dominated like that. We will see how this team responds in the coming weeks, and I am still holding out for an NIT bid.

I am all for Kruger, and I hope we can look back at this and ask what the hell happened there. Kruger has a lot of work to do for us to be competitive. If we can make a post season tournament ill be happy with this season though.

this is pretty much what I expected as this season started. The pleasant surprises in non-conference play don't change the fact that we are talent short.

I am still very pleased with the job coach and the boys have done so far.

NOthing is worse than Capel.

Kruger did best with what was left by Capel. Give it two more years, we will be
in the hunt for the Big12 title regularly. You can see the vast improvement already even with the ugly loss yesterday.

The bottom line is that some of you got your expectations for this season WAAAY out of whack earlier in the year. All of the NCAA tournament talk was just ridiculous.

I think the two biggest things coming out of tonight's game was the negative impact on this team's confidence and our absence of effort. No way a team that averages being 2" taller per starter should lose the boards by 15.

Imperative that we be competitive against Kansas on Saturday to keep some confidence in our ability to play in the B12. Let the hawks blow us out at home and our confidence will be so in the dumper that we can likely expect to follow the Kansas game up with losses to the pukes and KSU and a 1-4 (Tech win) start in the conference.

Play Kansas competitively and keep our confidence level above nada and we can realistically start the conference 2-3 (wins over OSU & Tech) perhaps even 3-2 (KSU win). I think Saturday could be critical for a team that now has a fragile confidence level after their trip to Columbia.

You can't just take the large number of points we lost by, and say it's the worst game we've ever played. We didn't play good, but we certainly didn't play THAT bad. Bad matchup, and Mizzou was on fire. It happens. How many teams left on our schedule have 4 guards that good? None. Other than Mizzou in Norman.

we didn't turn the ball over .. 8 we shot the ball as bad as we can ...

they shot the ball great ... and early the refs "let them play" ... which was not good for us .... mizzou thrives on bumps and reach ins ... i am pretty happy based on how the game was called that we only had 8 TO's ...

Agreed. Step 1 in turning things around is making sure you handle the teams you are supposed to handle. We just lost to a team that clearly has better players than us. Had we played our best game, we'd still have lost.

Our mission this year is to keep beating teams we 'should' beat and get to the off-season with a sense that we are moving in the right direction. Then we add more players, add more experience, and take the next step. We aren't going to take the players we have today and compete consistently with really good teams. That is asking way too much.

Agreed.

In fact, I think this could be a positive because maybe KU overlooks us and we steal one Saturday?

One thing for sure, we have something to prove in the next few games.

I'm guilty of proclaiming this could be a tourney team but I did it when we still had Newell. Since he left, I've tempered my expectations and think it will be very tough to get to the tourney this year. We could still make the NIT or the other tourney, which would be good but I think it will be tough, too. This league is good and we play 3 of the 4 best teams twice where in years past we only played them once (KU, KSU, MU). Also, no CU or NU which were the 2 worst programs in the old big 12.

Boog, don't you think that the Cincy and Missouri games, with their "street ball" toughness type play, were the first two games where we really missed Newell's toughness and ability to create. I really think he would have helped us in those two games. Don't know if he could have made enough of a difference to win at Missouri (missouri just played a great game at home -- it happens). But, I do think he was missed last night and against Missouri.

I think his presence also motivated Bird to play harder. As Lon was putting Calvin in every time someone looked a little lazy.

I'm still predicting that we win half of our conference games, plus or minus a game. This would make for a decent year and a good start for the Kruger era. I see us being really improved next year.

Yeah, that game happened BECAUSE of Capel... Let's not forget that.

This

The loss was worse than I expected, but the outcome did not surprise me at all. This is not an ultra-talented team at any position. Does that mean we're completely void of talent? Of course not. But any team with glaring weaknesses will have those deficiences exploited by an opponent as good as the Missouri Tigers. There's a reason why Mizzou is undefeated and ranked #5 in the country. They're good, really good!

I said two weeks ago that it would take nothing short of a miracle for OU to beat the top three teams in the conference (Mizzou, Baylor and KU), even at home. I believe that even more now. So, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high when Mizzou comes to town in early February. I think the only difference in the outcome will be in the score. Sure hope I'm wrong.

Exactly. This MU team is senior heavy and has been working hard all summer. They got bigger in the weight room and got clear in their heads. Their strengths and our weaknesses were a bad matchup. They're playing downhill right now and even a perfect game by us wouldn't have been enough.

In fact, I think this could be a positive because maybe KU overlooks us and we steal one Saturday?

Doubt it. They're absolutely buttraping KSU 35-20 at the half. If it wasn't for KU's usual 10 T/O it would be a lot worse.

Edit: 39-36 KU with 12:20 left.

We lost by 38 points and it wasn't that close. I hate to hear that we "just don't have the players yet". That is true in some sense but we should be able to compete better than that with what we have now. I can't accept that we are just that bad right now. We brought in new coaches to make the team better and to determine the best way to use the skills that we do have. That was our 13th game, not our 1st. If we want to be better next year we have to get a lot better this year.

I realize that we are weak at PG and that can make you look very bad against certain teams. However, I see a lot of other things that concern me across the team, including players and coaching. It is my hope that we just need a few more games to adjust to the opponent quality but we shall see.

I have pulled back to my original goal of staying out of the conference cellar.
