I really like this hire...but is he the best coach we could have gotten for that type of money????? Jay Wright and Jamie Dixon make almost half of that.

We were paying a premium for the NCAA issues and the state of the program, not to mention "up and comers" probably wouldn't look favorably on the short leash Capel had (2 bad years and out after an Elite 8). He's about as good as we could have possibly hoped for right now.. which is still pretty damn good actually.

All three just got similar paydays. There is no way Jay Wright comes to OU for 2.2 m. That was the market price this offseason for a good coach. Just be happy that OU was willing to pony up the money.

Ya but I really doubt any of those guys would have accepted the job...besides I think Kruger is as much proven as they are if not more...

I thought so til I started looking at college coach's salaries. Guys like Mark Few, Jay Wright, Jamie Dixon, Brad Stevens, Mark Turgeon...these guys are making around a 1 mil a year. Is Kruger better than these coach's and if not, did we attempt to wave 2.2 million in front of their noses?

This line of thinking just doesn't make any sense.

First - The total compensation packages for Jay Wright and Jamie Dixon are nowhere near their base salaries, to harp on that number is meaningless. At the end of the day if you really think they're not taking home minimum 2x to 3x that number you are crazy.

Second - We had 0 SHOT at getting one of those big names coming to OU. We supposedly took our shot at someone like Buzz Williams who honestly hasn't proven that much at this point and Marquette is shelling out 2.5M per for him now.

Third - Out of reading however many posts on various message boards and the people whining and complaining about how much we spent on LK I have yet to hear any person mention a guy who we COULD HAVE GOTTEN at that number that is as good as or better then Lon Kruger.

1st, I think Kruger is a better hire than Buzz Williams.
2nd, we are talking about base pay b/c thats what Kruger 2.2 million is. I'm sure he will be bringing home more than that.
3rd, I don't know who we could have gotten b/c I don't know if 2.2 million was being offered to some of those coach's I mentioned

Like I said...I like the hire no matter what. I was just curious if he was the best that we could have done with the money we were willing to pay.

Yes he was. There is no way the people you mentioned would have come to OU for 2.2. Search firms gauge intrest to find candidates. I'm sure they contacted, indirectly, everyone you listed and many more. Most of those names wouldn't consider OU for that price. Money isn't everything to a lot of these guys. Ego is even more important.

You are correct.:clap

Like it or not, OU was in shambles before this hire. Our talent (other than a couple) is down, we have nobody coming in that is great, and we have pending NCAA sanctions. That is all part of the deal, unfortunately. To get Lon Kruger is a steal, and he will rebuild.

Read a post on a Mizzou board this morning that this will go down as the spring that changed the game as far as coaching salaries.

Mike Anderson's deal at Arkansas put him among the highest paid 6-8 coaches in the nation. Since then a few more guys have already signed similar deals, and pretty much every coach worth anything is going to use $2 million as the starting point for any future negotiations.

From what I found, Dixon is making 1.3 mil a year.

Pitt extends coach Dixon's deal
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon signed a two-year contract extension Wednesday, ending any speculation he might leave the Panthers for a higher-paying job.

Dixon was already signed through the 2015-16 season, at a salary of about $1.6 million per season. The new deal runs through 2017-18, meaning Dixon is under contract for the next eight seasons.

"I know how good I've got it at Pitt," Dixon said. "I'm not going anywhere. This is where I want to be, and this is where I always hoped to be. I'm happy to be at Pitt. I'm the luckiest guy in the world, and I recognize it every day."

Athletic director Steve Pederson wouldn't say if Dixon got a raise. However, Pederson said Tuesday -- upon announcing a two-year extension for football coach Dave Wannstedt -- that the Panthers are competitive in paying their coaches.

"We never talk about the pay of our coaches, but we've always tried to compensate our coaches fairly and make sure their [salaries] are competitive," Pederson said. "So, that's something, with all of our coaches, that we've tried to make certain of at all times."

So, he was making $1.6 mil per before the extension, so my guess is he's making close to or over $2 mil per now. As others have said that is strictly salary, so his total compensation could be substantially higher than that.

His team was a #1 seed this year, we had back to back losing seasons for the first time since the 60's and have NCAA violations hanging over our head

Yes. Other coaches may be making half or less than that, but still not come to OU.

I think OU fans have an overinflated view of our basketball programs attractiveness. Not that I'm saying its bad, but I think football has made most OU fans think they can get any coach they want....reality is far different. While OU has good basketball tradition, I dont really see it as a destination job for top flight basketball coaches....unless that coach has previous ties to the program.

If it was a more desirable job, it wouldn't have taken us until 2011 to hire a coach that had coached a final four at another school.

Showing this kind of commitment to the basketball program will only help us win in the future. Now we can go to a recruit and say, "See, we just shelled out big bucks to bring in a top shelf coach and now we want you to come in and be part of that." If I was a recruit out there it would definitely get me interested in Oklahoma. And guys like Guerrero and Jurick might take a second look at us.
