2017 possible Targets

A reliable poster on Soonerscoop says DSM will be gone in the next week.

He has never contributed in any basketball thread before. I asked him if he had a source or just hoping. He never replied. DSM has a redshirt year available so I guess it's possible. He would have to battle to even be the backup PG at OU next season.

my son knew him from CCC and let's say academics is not his strong suit, maybe something has developed there..who knows.

I think Shepard has as much upside or more and with Young coming in sure he sees his time dropping.

We need a solid post who can do 13/8, block shots,.At least 6 8 to 6 10.

We need big talented bigs. The tourney is full of bigs who can play solid college ball. LK got to get at least one. Or we may be another Iowa st.

Well, we just made the Final 4 last year without "big talented bigs". I think Lon knows what he's doing. ;)

I agree Lon knows what he's doing. But it's also true OU needs better bigs, and I think Lon knows this. Everyone goes on and on about how college basketball is a guards game, and that's true to an extent. But I can assure you even with Young if OU gets the same production from their bigs, all around, that they got this last year they will go nowhere. It doesn't take a basketball savant to see OU needs better bigs.

I can tell you from talking to a member of the basketball staff that they expect a lot more from Polla that most of us posters do. I'm anxious to hear how he competes this summer.

There are very few of those in the college game (most score off putbacks, not really flashing any post moves). And those that are of that caliber go to the big 4 or 5 programs, for the most part. Not saying I disagree, but saying those players are hard to find is an understatement.

Now that's the kind of stuff I want to hear, thanks Usedtobe1. Did you get the feeling that the staff member is expecting lots of minutes NEXT year from Polla? Have you heard anything from the staff regarding Manek?

No, I didn't ask. He was talking to my son when I walked up and got in late on the conversation. It was at a youth basketball tournament. He and my son are good friends. He was saying that Kruger knows they need more bulk in the post, and doesn't think Lattin and McNeace will be able to add bulk. The coaches really liked Polla the week he visited OU. He said they thought Polla could be a 8 point, 8 rebound a game guy, and add a physical presence. I don't think he necessarily meant next season but I was afraid to ask..... my son has warned me not to pry.

I did talk to him about next season, and he is really pumped. The only players he mentioned specifically were Trae, McGusty, and Doolittle. I've not heard a word about Manek.

I'm watching the Wichita State game and their backup center is a big, bulky 6'10" kid from Estonia (Nurger). His game is kind of what I expect from Polla.

Lattin will average somewhere around that next season imo. Jamuni has that potential too.

I would not be surprised if ou has the best bigs in the conference next season. Trae will open the floor up and the bigs will have room to work again.

Haven't heard anything new and no schollys open at this time but...

Elijah Brown 19 ppg at New Mexico

I dunno, I'd sign on for a Spangler clone in a heartbeat.

Maybe he doesn't qualify as a big big?

Yes, that's what I was inferring. I agree with you though, if we could even find someone like him that would help us immensely. Had Spangler been on this team, I think we make the NCAA or at worst NIT. So many games were lost when we couldn't get a rebound and a stop or couldn't get the offensive rebound when we needed it.

I think we'd have been in the tourney. I stated before the season that I was very concerned about who would fill Spangler's role, and the answer turned out to be what I feared it would be: No one, really.

Got to see him play in February of 2016 on a visit to friends back in Albuquerque. Really good shooter but really temperamental. I had heard he might be "looking" as a grad transfer.

I'm not sure we'd be a very good match. He'd surely want to start and he's not going to start over Young or McGusty so that means displacing Odomes from the starting lineup. But Odomes was better than Brown according every advanced metric on both kenpom and sports-reference. I suppose we could move Odomes to the 4 and play a small lineup with Doolittle coming off the bench but, considering that the coaches are looking for another big, I doubt that's something they're that interested in.

He scored a lot of points for a mediocre New Mexico team but wasn't a very efficient offensive player so it seems that if a scholarship does become open, we could probably find someone who fits our needs a little better.

with so much movement at the end of each season perhaps that 13th scholly should be in a hip pocket and saved for a special circumstance. The 13th guy is never going to be a factor so make it Preferred walk-on. Then if a grad student or someone bolts or changes his mind late you always have 1 spot open.
If not give it to a walk-on SR for his last year as a reward.
