at least the staff is going after elite talent (well, competing with elite schools for recruits) that's a plus.

I guess there are 2 sides.

1. Don't even offer and accept you are a level below these "elite" schools and go get the "leftovers".

2. Go after the big boys but just get nibbles and no bites hoping that someday you'll land that big fish.

Before ya go all postal on me...Yes, I know sometimes those 5* everyone wants don't work out and those 2-3* guys come together and make a magical run...but it'd be nice to get stud every yr or so.

just my 2 cents

Am I imagining things, or wasn’t there a large segment of the board that complained that Kruger and his staff went after too many “big fish” and ended up losing out to blue bloods? It feels like lots of posters are suddenly praising the new staff and acting as if we never made a run at elite talent in recent years. I think we went after a good number of blue chip kids. The problem was that we didn’t land many, not that we failed to try. I think it’s always worth going after elite recruits who you have a realistic shot at getting. You will probably miss one more than you get, but you just need to get a couple ...

While it’s true that Lon and his staff struck out on most of the high profile recruits, the complaint usually centered around too many projects and low or mid major recruits who were not OU caliber players. I’ll also add that the number of blue chip recruits Moser and his staff have on their recruiting list is superior to anything I remember in the Kruger post Final Four era. I made it clear that I was not a fan of Lon’s staff after Henson and Hill left.

Time will tell if Moser and his staff will have more success in recruiting against the blue bloods. But, IMO, there is no comparison in the effort nor in the quality of the product in recent years.

I think the problem with Lon was similar to Capel in that they both chased plenty of stars, failed to get them, and instead of ending up with Option B's, ended up with Options C or even D.

There were a lot of things I wished Lon did differently, but I don't think going after more elite players was one of them.

This is the Bat Signal. They'll be all over this post. You watch.

My point was that Lon and his staff focused too much time in recruiting players who were not good enough to play at OU in the first place, not that they should have recruited more stars.

I had a lot to say about our recruiting in the post FF era. For every high D1 recruit the staff signed during those years, there was at least one that didn’t belong on an OU roster.

umm, I don't remember Lon getting visits or even really going after "too many big fish"...

I DID post at one time, sometimes getting that "big fish" can create havoc and if you can get 5 guys to play together it can be good.

Lon had success with Buddy's group...but Buddy wasn't a star until his Sr yr. Those guys all played their roles and started 3 years (?) together...that can overcome a lot.

Then ya get the TY year. Total opposite.

So, my point was it's nice to see the new staff go after these guys. IF after a yr maybe two of getting nothing they'll have to change strategies...I'm guessing. Lon had 10 yrs? I'll give this staff at least a few to see where it ends up.
