Can we confirm these were academic issues? That is the gut feeling I have with the available information.

No. According to a reply (to a question made) by an OU coach at a Tip In Club function, it had nothing to do with injuries or academics. It was a "personal issue" and Manyang was in good academic standing, and still is.

So far, the actual nature of the "personal issue" has been kept private. We can speculate about family, girl friends, and other things if we wish.

I concur.

Maybe your information is flawed. None of the reports I have read or received by PM said anything about academic issues.

Justin Hite on the OUScout board said this after he personally called Indian Hills to ask about Manyang's status. Note the parts in bold:

Just got off the phone with a spokesman at Indian Hills Community College, who said he expects Manyang back at practice tomorrow and eligible for IHCC's season finale on Saturday. He said Manyang has kept up with his academic work while taking his leave of absence.

Everything points to Manyang being academically qualified for Oklahoma in the fall. The IHCC spring semester starts at the end of this week.

What information do you have that says Academic?? It's not. Its pretty cut and dry. If you fail 1st semester you dont play 2nd. You dont just sit 8-10 games and then come back...

My bad, must have been reading between the lines from something I read, if I see it again will post.

Depending on the rules (and NJCAA can be different than NCAA) you can take intersession courses to make up said credit. Believe the ineligibility is based on a rolling time frame, for example, three semesters. Not just the the one immediately prior. This is how it at least used to be.

Thanks for the clarification.

I was told that IHCC works on a quarters system, which allows Manyang to take a bunch of classes. If I'm interpreting your post correctly, that appears to be close to what you are saying.

The important thing is that he is reported to be on track to complete his studies at IHCC and attend OU this fall.

From Indian Hills most recent game on February 28th.

"Akolda Manyang again was a force on the inside, coming off the bench to score 11 points and leading the IHCC rebounding with 12. The 7-footer also blocked seven shots."

Forget an impressive double-double in points and rebounds, the stat I like the most is the one I highlighted in bold. That number is even more important when you throw in the shots he changed by his presence in the paint.

How long has it been since we had a rim protector? Longar Longar, maybe? A player who can defend the paint with his height, long arms and ability to block shots these days is more valuable now than ever before. OU's opponents will not be so keen to drive the lane next year when Manyang is on the floor.

The last true shot blocker we had was probably Jabarhi Brown.

Khadeem has 26 so far in spot duty. Those two on the floor at the same time should be some pretty impressive rim protection.

Yes, it would. Lattin and Manyang will be OU's version of a Swat Team!

Interesting. I think Lattin has a real shot at being very high on that career list. 133 doesn't seem like much of a stretch based on what he did this season in limited minutes.
