Austin Box dead

Where did you see Drug overdose?? Everything I have read has said no cause of death has been determined to this point.

rumor is oxycodone overdose. kid had bad back problems throughout his career at OU, enough to consider not playing this year. Likely a cause and effect to what happened today, anybody knows how severe back problems can be and the kind of meds they give you.

Yep, and when you mix those back meds with anything else a college kid is likely to run across......

Bless his heart. Terrible news. :(

Prayers and condolences to his family and friends. Truly sad news.

This happens way too often with football players. A kid on my sons team was drinking and mixing prescription meds and died last year.

Not saying he died from the OD but to say you need to mix these things with anything else to die is not paying attention to what is happening. These painkillers are not safe. I don't care if they are legal. I have several friends who are and have been addicted to these things. It's a horrible addiction. Horrible. As bad as any out there. They don't call it hillbilly heroin for nothing. Just because it's legal doesn't make it safe. Thoughts to the whole Box family regardless of the reason. I just have seen what these legal meds can do and it's a horrible thing. Sorry for the rant. Just hit a spot with me.

Box was plagued with severe back problems and was considering ending his football career. If it was an OD, it was accidental.

Not everybody agrees, but I think there are more "categories" on such a scenario then accidental and suicide.

JMO.

I really feel for his parents. No parent should ever have to live through a child dying.

Venables was supposedly teared up during his entire speech a few minutes ago.

Terrible news... He was really starting to find his niche at MLB, and was part of the reason for OU's resurgence towards the end of last season. Prayers to him and his family.

I don't want to turn this into something that takes away from Austin's death. That isn't good. But I'll say this.....I don't consider it an accidental death when a kid abuses prescription pain pills. I know the ME will likely use that label, but there is a big difference in a kid doing things like snorting oxy, and somebody that might take one extra pill b/c they fill like crap, only to have it not mix with some over the counter drug they took. To me, those two things aren't in the same category.

And I don't know the facts on Box, so I'm only speaking hypothetically. Just a pet peeve of mine.

My ex was a pharmacist and he felt that oxycodone and oxycontin were the most dangerous prescription drugs in the pharmacy. Dangerous to the patients because they became so easily addicted. Dangerous to the pharmacist because they were so popular on the street.

Why is there a big difference? A decent young man with a bright future is dead. There's absolute no reason to sully his name and memory or the memory of ANYONE'S beloved child just to split hairs. It solves nothing.

Not saying you were being mean, some things are just better left unsaid and alone. This is a lesson of age and one I certainly haven't always understood, but do now.
