Austin Box dead

Prayers for the Box Family. My deepest sympathy for them. No pain like losing a child......

I don't want to turn this into something that takes away from Austin's death. That isn't good. But I'll say this.....I don't consider it an accidental death when a kid abuses prescription pain pills. I know the ME will likely use that label, but there is a big difference in a kid doing things like snorting oxy, and somebody that might take one extra pill b/c they fill like crap, only to have it not mix with some over the counter drug they took. To me, those two things aren't in the same category.

And I don't know the facts on Box, so I'm only speaking hypothetically. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Why not just keep your sorry comments to yourself? Accidental overdose is when someone didn't know what the hell they were doing with a narcotic meant to help relieve severe pain.

If he did overdose, I doubt it was because he wanted to die.. dumbass. Probably because he wanted to get high (as some kids do), or relieve the horrible pain, and didn't realize what he was doing.

You just turned it into what you said you didn't want too. I can tell you that me and the hundreds of others that knew Box, probably some on this board, knows it was accidental. The kid was NOT a drug abuser, in fact I'm not sure I ever seen him drink a beer. Unfortunately he had severe back problems from his sacrifices on the football field and needed the medication. I was on so much medication after injuring my back in a powerlifting meet that coming off that stuff was a nightmare. Austin had just graduated, was going to be the starting MLB on the preseason #1 team. Had he been snorting oxy someone would had known. We will likely never know the exact circumstances but I am confident in saying if its labeled an accidental OD that he was just in pain and took too much or more likely he had a severe reaction with something else he had taken, possibly a sports supplement.

Thank you for your post. You are spot on.

I have gone through 3 shoulder dislocations since my basketball playing days in Ardmore. Also, I had a cancerous tumor removed from my neck. All of these required a lot of pain medication. The pain got to a point where I just didn't know what else to do other than take a Lortab.

It could have easily been me. It's just sad that some sorry piece of garbage comes in here and insinuates that Box purposely overdosed.

He would go out from time to time. But I don't think that's a big deal, a lot of college kids do. There's some rumors saying it's a mix of alcohol and oxy. I hope that's not right.

What does any of that matter? He has passed away. Hashing that stuff up has no purpose other than to potentially hurt people. Just let it pass and remember him for his great personality, enthusiasm, and the work he put in for the Sooner football program.

Exactly. The "why" doesn't matter. It would be horrible regardless of the circumstances of his death.

The why matters if it can help prevent the same tragic end happening to someone else. Accidents happen when people don't know the truth.

We know from the misdemeanors this is not accurate. Other than that, I agree with your post.

Even if he became addicted to the oxy, it's not like that was planned or intentional. It happens. That's the danger of some of these drugs. My wife has a very addictive personality and she has almost become addicted to oxy before, and I think my elderly mom is addicted to it but she doesn't drink.

Regardless of all this, he was a good kid who, like every kid, made mistakes. I feel really bad for his parents, family, and the team.

I left my "ex" because she got addicted to the oxy, she has seemingly cleaned up now, but it was a sad thing. Can't think of a more dangerous "legal" drug, especially when you drink with it. However it happened, it is a tragedy to lose anyone to a drug overdose and it is happening more and more frequently with prescription pain pills.

A lot of people are addicted to oxy and pills of the same type. Dr's should be held accountable for allowing it to happen since they are writing the prescriptions.

If there were any drinking involved, I seriously doubt the alcohol and oxy's were intentionally used in conjunction to get high. When people are on pain medication for an extended period of time to manage pain, they often up the dosage themselves as they build up a tolerance. If he were also drinking, he probably didn't realize that it was as dangerous as it is, and being a young, strong man, he probably didn't think it could hurt him. If this is the case, that would certainly be "accidental". As well, it is something that needs to be addressed with young athletes who often sustain injuries and are prescribed these medications.

Instead of throwing speculation out there, how about let's wait until the medical examiner's findings come out.

A few years ago there was a string of athlete deaths related to ephedrine. Those stories helped bright the issue to light and as far as I know there have not been any tragedies related to the drug in quite some time.

Hopefully if there was a similar issue with Box and another legal substance, his death can at least contribute to a discussion that helps illuminate an issue that isn't being discussed enough.

Agreed.

I'm guessing most on this board are out of touch with just how big of a problem oxy is. Even the ones that admit to knowing it's an issue, or a dangerous drug, I'm guessing have no idea how pervasive it's use really is.

Unfortunately, I'm well aware.

I am very well aware thank you. Represented dozens of them with a few trials.

It is absolutely tragic. Oxy is very dangerous but if taken properly it will not kill you. It is very easy to get addicted however and then you need more of it or a different way of taking it.

Its very possible that a legal supplement such as creatine, or the dozens of new legal HGH's could counteract with the oxy. I know my Dr's would always tell me to be careful with my supplements and prescription meds. Being around the powerlifting, MMA, culture there are lots that are on pain meds and take any kind of supplement. Some of these supplements increase blood flow to muscles by actually widening the veins like some blood pressure meds. Lots of WWE wrestlers were doing that stuff too, just today Macho Man had a heart attack and ran his car into a tree and died. He was an admitted steroid/painkiller user. I think most know that's its dangerous and stagger their meds accordingly throughout the day.

My point toward Austin Box is it was accidental, however it happened. God rest his soul!
