Austin Grandstaff Commits to OU

It's my understanding that he will be eligible to play the second semester. The question is, will that be the best for him, and for OU, or should he use that time as a redshirt season, the way Matt Freeman plans to do?

I agree with Campbest. He should redshirt, work hard for the remainder of that semester and next summer to be ready to go when the fall season tips off.

He doesnt have a choice. He's sitting a full year starting now. He'll be ready to go by January of 2017.

I was referring to the mandatory one year for a transfer.

If you ask me, transferring at semester is pointless from a player's perspective. It's a lot tougher to break into the rotation in Jan/Feb with a shorter bench during conference season as opposed to November. But if you're not happy, then I guess you're not happy.

Freeman's situation is completely different.

tons of guys are mid year transfers and end up playing a huge role fro their new team ...

see burton who is already the isu 6th man and gave us all kinds of problems

I have been wondering if they will use him next winter or wait until the fall.

Oh I think theyll use him for sure. He is a pure shooter. You cant keep those guys off the floor in our league. I dont think he starts next jan 2017, but he'll play.

He'll have a semerster to practice, summer drills and iso work, then preseson, then practice starting in oct till december.

He'll be ready.

I think he'll have a role next season, once he's eligible, too. Different player than what we currently have on the roster and I'll think he'll fit just fine. Solid opportunity to start his last 2 seasons here, IMO. I look forward to laying eyes on he and Freeman at a practice soon.

Just thought about how these practices will start looking if recruiting continues to be so positive. I will be attending as many as possible that's for sure.

You're right, the only similarity in Grandstaff and Freeman is that both players will be eligible to play in the second semester, one in 2016 and the other in 2017.

The positive I see is that Grandstaff will have more time to adapt to OU's offense and get acquainted with his teammates. If I was in his shoes, I would use that semester and the summer of 2017 as a redshirt season, so I would be ready to fit right in to start the 2017-18 season. The question is will he be patient enough to sit for that long?

Practices are about to get a lot more challenging. Defending shooters like these two will really help our team defense down the stretch this season....Do we know when Freeman and Grandstaff will begin practicing with the team? Do they have to wait until 2nd semester officially begins?

I'm reasonably sure Freeman can practice with the team at the beginning of the second semester (not sure of the date). I don't know about Grandfield? Maybe someone else can answer that question.

Aren't both of these guys going to be enrolled at OU this semester? I thought they were both eligible to play the second half of next season.

Freeman is eligible to play right now if we wanted him to.

Class starts next Tuesday, not sure the actual rules on when practice can start.

freeman could play next week if OU wanted him to .. (they don't he will be a 1 semester RS) and then have 4 to play 4 ...

grandstaff has to sit out 1 full year because of the transfer .. but he can practice .. he will not RS at all and will be a Soph playing at semester next year

Pretty sure Grandstaff will RS during the year he is sitting out. Otherwise, he'd be losing 1 of his 4 years to play. By default, if a player transferring and sitting out has his redshirt still available, he uses it.

He only redshirts if he doesn't play second semester. He didn't redshirt this year because he played first semester. If he plays second semester next year, he will not have redshirted. In 2016/17 he will be starting his third year of college as a junior (assuming he plays next winter).

Nope. When he plays at the beginning of '17 he will still be a frosh in eligibility. He will be a soph in eligibility starting in 17-18.

So He has 3.5 years of Eligibiliy left starting next Christmas Break?
