Then why do all these players transfer mid year if they lose the whole year? And why does the NCAA allow them to play at mid season? Makes no sense. So Grandstaff essentially has 2.5 years of eligibility left after playing only .5? Seems unfair. Why not just sit out the whole year and have 3?

That's his option. The NCAA only requires them to sit out 2 semesters. If he wants to sit out 3 semesters, he can redshirt his entire 2nd year. The advantage is it would give him more time to learn the system and physically mature.
The truth is they really only miss the first 7-8 games of a ~ 35 game season after their transfer, and some of those non-conference games are little more than an exhibition game.
Thanks for clearing it up. I thought for sure I had read that eligibility was semester specific for bball. There are tons bball transfers who become eligible mid-year(semester). It never comes up in football because football season is in one semester.
from another site .. the report (from Justin Hite) is that Grandstaff (and family) is paying his own way the second semester ... ( we don't have a scholarship until this summer)
that shows a lot of commitment to OU and that he really wants to be here ..
yup...when the parents are complaining...that's an issue to me. My son plays college baseball, and as much as I want him to play...it's not my decision. I keep my mouth shut.
*I will add, I read he has a kid in Texas and wanted to be closer.
