Austin Grandstaff Commits to OU

I don't think it's that black and white. James is already getting minutes. Bringing in strong. Odomes is probably at the same level as grandstaff too as far as progressing to the D1 level

I don't think it's black and white but from what I've seen and the fact that he's going to be with the team now and not during the summer, I think he will start. He's 6'5 so he has some height do he can play the 3 some.

Going to be lots of competition for playing time on the wings next year between Odomes, James, McGusty, Doolittle and Grandstaff.

Doolittle is more of a combo forward. Odomes is a 3. The competition for minutes will come down to Grandstaff, James, and McGusty, IMO.

I am sure he plays 20ish minutes a game starting or not.

I dont know about starting... Doesnt really matter. Kid can play and will help this team for 3 more years.
In fact coming in to start big 12 play 2017, I doubt lon starts him.

If someone gets cold on gameday, you just bench them for someone not as cold. Need as many natural shooters as you can get.

Good pick-up.

Awesome. I was really high on this kid when we recruited him the first two times. Hopefully he puts in the work over the next 12 months, and contributes a bunch going forward.

Just bumping so I can enjoy for a few more days!

Ohio St. lost to Indiana by almost 30pts today. Something smells in Columbus.

CoachTalk told me about this by PM right after he left Ohio State. I asked him not to post it because it was too personal. But, now that it's out there, I think that had more to do with Austin leaving OSU than the lack of playing time.

Props to the young man for accepting responsibility for bringing a child into his life! I have always been high on him, but appreciate him even more now that we know one of the reasons he wanted to be closer to home.

Grandstaff is good enough to start at OU but if he doesn't necessarily start right off the bat OU looks to be solid with elite level talent off the bench with guys like Grandstaff. By the time he's a junior he's going to be starting imo. I also like the fact that his child can now see him more often which is important to any child. This is great for all involved!

I'm really enjoying getting behind this Kruger Sooner program. So classy and easy to pull for. I'm starting to think we just might actually get a natty in basketball soon. :D

Just now getting on board? Man the wagon is almost full...

Starting not starting... Kruger will answer that. Does he want a sharpshooter in there to start or bring him off the bench when the other team subs and has less effective defenders in... Many factors.

Lon will put Grandstaff in a role which will make the team most successful, it's up to Austin (and his father) if they are willing to accept that role. Starting next year, Austin will have played or attempted to play for five schools in four years, that is a bit concerning. Hope this is his last stop.

Kid has talent, but honestly think a red-shirt year if the best thing for his development (physically & mentally).

Five schools in four years sounds like a problem to me. I am grateful for the talent and believe that Lon will be able to work with him, but am suspicious that Austin is "needy". As long as we have enough wings to play solid minutes, I like campbest's suggestion of a redshirt year.

I love the sign and I'm excited!!

But I do have a question. I watched his videos and he is very good obviously. But I don't think he is overwhelming good to think he should start and play 20+ minutes a game as a freshman at a big time university like ohio state.

He may not even average 20+ minutes a game next year

why was he and his family complaining about minutes? He is a freshman and they need time to get use to the college game. Is this something we should worry about and worry that him and his family will complain about playing time at ou as well?

I think our team has good chemistry and I sure hope we aren't getting a guy like TMG that could ruin chemistry or be the bad egg.

But, I am excited because he is very good and I am hopefully he can change his attitude. It should be about the team not so much about how much playing time a FRESHMAN is getting.

This isn't Lon's first rodeo so he won't allow any kid to be a cancer to a program like TMG. Lon wouldn't recruit players like that unless they were willing to change and if they didn't change then they will be shown the door.

I have my doubts if Grandstaff will stick around based on his past record of changing schools. Maybe he is willing to be a team player at OU knowing that if he works hard he will have every opportunity to be a member of great teams and even contribute -- hopefully at a high level. I hope he proves me wrong but if he doesn't stick at OU we have more than enough talent to take his scholarship without missing a beat.

Well, he has to redshirt now since he can't play for a year right? At least that's what I think Campbest is referring too. Him sitting out 2 years is not in his best interests and he for sure won't stick around if that's the plan. These kids want to play so a year off is one thing but 2 years is too much.

It's my understanding that he will be eligible to play the second semester. The question is, will that be the best for him, and for OU, or should he use that time as a redshirt season, the way Matt Freeman plans to do?

I agree with Campbest. He should redshirt, work hard for the remainder of that semester and next summer to be ready to go when the fall season tips off.
