LSU wins on the road ...

EXCERPT ...

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Ben Simmons made sure he took more than seven shots this time. He did just about everything else offensively, too.

Ben Simmons ... #25, LSU
Pts: 21
Reb: 13
Ast: 7

Simmons, LSU's fabulous freshman, piled up 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Tigers to an 80-68 victory over Auburn Tuesday night.

He took charge early coming off a 77-75 loss to Oklahoma when Simmons went 6-of-7 shooting, a strong but not dominant performance.

''I just wanted to be more aggressive and attack the rim more,'' he said. ''I know usually when I take shots they fall. Just looking at stats from previous games, when I shot more than seven shots we win games.

Of course it had nothing to do with how good of a job Ryan Spangler did.

It wasn't. It was how OU defended him and LSU in general, as a team.

Lol. Spangler is the key to everything we do defensively. He had an excellent game against Simmons and deserves to be singled out. He's been an underrated defender his entire career.

They didn't finish his stat line there........he also had 6 turnovers.

lol, what? I'd argue Lattin is more of that than Spangler. The team really doesn't have a "key". It's probably the three guards in general with their pressure and length. But honestly, it's a bit like the old Kelvin defenses where they, in the half-court at least, just try not to give up the easy baskets. They do a pretty good job of that.

Didn't poke state just win their first road game at Auburn?

Yes, Auburn is 9-12---110 RPI, 155 BPI, 179 KenPom (191 AdjD). Still a very impressive stat line, but Auburn is a pretty bad team, especially on defense.

Spangler is our weak link defensively. Not bashing him, but that's fact. We were blessed that the coach for LSU is clueless and Ben is passive or we would have lost. He attempted 7 shots!

Also, not every game is going to be a huge scoring game for Simmons.

Spangler calls all their switches out front. He communicates to the entire team as far as rotations under the basket and how they will play wing pick and roll. There are several options within their defense on how they play certain flows and, for Kruger at least, the big involved makes the call. Lattin is getting better and obviously offers much better rim protection. He just isn't as experienced as Spangler is in handling these different facets of how we defend teams. When Spangler is on the floor, he runs the show and we are much better defensively because of him.

Yeah I'm sure Lon could have put you in there for spangs and the result would have been the same.

I have been critical of spangs defense but he was fantastic against LSU.

who cares what simmons does or does not do...other than lsu fans

agree...who really cares...

BUT, IF Simmons had the fire Buddy has (or at least showed) lsu would have won. IF Simmons had "taken over" the last 10 min, heck even 5, like Buddy they would have won, easily...he ONLY took 7 shots, made 6. Think about that...didn't shoot 1 time the last 10 min...we won by 2 with a shot by Cousins at 4 sec and they had a LAY-UP blocked as time expired.

Agree. And his season +\- proves it.

Ryan has always gotten a bad rap as a defender. While athletic length has always been a difficult matchup for him, he always gives great effort and is almost always where he is supposed to be. Finally having rim protection/athletic length has allowed him slide over to more favorable match ups while still QBing the defense.

This is comical. Really is.
