Ben Simmons' Next Game (after OU)

Spangler is our weak link defensively. Not bashing him, but that's fact. We were blessed that the coach for LSU is clueless and Ben is passive or we would have lost. He attempted 7 shots!

Also, not every game is going to be a huge scoring game for Simmons.

that is a fact huh? good to know

This is comical. Really is.

Yep. Spangler has struggled a little to defend Niang over the years. Of course, so has pretty much everyone else, so that's no crime. Besides that one matchup, I have no idea where someone would even come up with that idea.

Niang is POY type player everyone struggles with him! I see your point though. Thatd be like judging all players on guarding Buddy. Not fair at all.

I don't think anyone has figured out the best way to defend Niang. Hopefully we won't have to worry about it anymore.

Rebounding is one of the most important skills in basketball. Spangler has been one of the best rebounders in the conference for three years.

So Spangler is a good defender??? Obviously he's a good player, he's a 10 and 10 guy, but you believe he's a good defender?

Yeah. Yeah I do. When he leaves the floor we get a whole lot worse.

It really is comical that you even say that he isnt

He's slow laterally. Especially guarding versatile 4s. Good enough Coach mannford?

And I'm not bashing him. He's a terrific player and has been big all year.

I'll just say this. Notice that Lattin is getting more of the assignment against stretch 4s. Again, please don't paint me as bashing the kid, but keeping his man in front is not strongsuit.

But to answer your question, go to the 51 minute mark and just watch him. His help defense is really a area of "oppurtunity".

Maybe he's not "great" defensively. (the stretch immediately following the knee injury comes to mind)

But the difference between him and what is on the bench is colossal. He's totally invaluable on the defensive end.

He can't jump either, yet wins 70% of jump balls.

saying he is a terrible defensive player is actually bashing him

Well this makes sense.. . your definition of good defense is being able to guard a stretch four

Everyone in the country struggles guarding versatile 4s. That's why they're so coveted at this level and the next. That's a far cry from Spangler being the "weak link defensively" as you originally stated.
