Best of Big 12 coaches? Take a look at Self By Steve Walentik

he never said that.

never said he did. which is why i said if he thinks that to be the case, then he needs to take his blue shades off.

Cheno did bring it up, though, so I asked him if that is what he really thought..sure glad you could answer for him!

I'm a college basketball fan. I can argue about any team I want, and if someone thinks they know more about a team than I do and so I should defer to their opinion that is ridiculous. Bill Self is the best coach in the Big 12. Hands down. Greatness is totally subjective. My definition is not the same as others, I realize this. What is the problem with me not thinking he's a great coach? Does that offend other people? Is your enjoyment of Self's coaching hindered by my opinion?

Explain how Self got outcoached and his team outplayed by Northern Iowa with the best team in the country this past year. What happened? Why did Self wait till the last 1-2 minutes to press when his team length, speed and depth was clearly better? What about Bucknell or Bradley? Why couldn't a "great coach" win games when his team is better? See, I'm doing what you're doing, criticizing everything Roy Williams did in retrospect, even though he knows a lot more than you or I combined about bball. You say what Roy did wrong in 03, and what he should have done with 20/20 hindsight and watching tons of replays. Wow amazing, it's so easy to say what he should have done.

Is Bill Self a better coach than Roy Williams?

Cheno is bringing the A game in this thread.

I may not know much...but I know basketball and specifically KU basketball. LOL

Cheno, do you really think Self drew it up for Sharon to almost travel? you need to take the blinders off, if that is the case. That was a very lucky play, and it was not drawn up like that, imo.
Tiny, Tiny, Tiny....I'm not the one with blinders on in this thread. Absolutely not did Bill Self tell Sherron to slip. The question was asked if Self drew up the play. Yes, he drew up that play and Sherron happened to slip but still completed the play that was drawn up.

However, the play is a dribble hand-off...it is very easy to see from the video, regardless which team you root for.
Absolutely and it's one KU runs all the time. In fact, I'm surprised Calipari didn't warn his team because Rose clearly steps back after the hand-off which he should have been hedging out over the screen/handoff and not let the space be created. Chalmers couldn't have driven, he had to shoot the 3.

Tiny, Tiny, Tiny....I never brought up that Sherron purposely slipped. The question was asked if the play that got Chalmers the open look was drawn up by Self. It was.

Because he got out coached and his team got outplayed those games. It happens to every coach/team in America. You can't take a single game and say the guy can't coach or is a great coach. Look at the body of work over a season and a career. Bill Self's body of work is phenomenal.
Tell me how Roy can not even make the NCAA tourney at UNC? That's never happened to Self. Not saying it won't but that's a prime example of a great coach who didn't just have a bad game but bad season.

Is Bill Self a better coach than Roy Williams?
IMO, yes he is now. I've had the privilage of having both sit on KU's bench and I think Bill Self does a better job. The reason I feel that way is on the defensive end and toughness. Self's teams are tougher.
