Big 12 all conference team and awards

Here is the entire list so far.

Sixth Man Award:Khadijiah Cave, Baylor, C, 6-2, So, Augusta, Ga.

Freshman of the Year:Gabbi Ortiz, Oklahoma, G, 5-9, Fr, Racine, Wis.

Player of the Year:Nina Davis, Baylor, F, 5-11, So, Memphis, Tenn.

Defensive Player of the Year:Chelsea Prince, TCU, F, 5-11, Sr, Fort Worth, Texas

Newcomer of the Year:Peyton Little, Oklahoma, G, 5-11, So, Abilene, Texas

Coach of the Year:Kim Mulkey, Baylor (15th season)

Coale or the coach at TCU did better than they were picked to do. Either should have been COY than Mulkey.

Not bad. I think Sharane and Gabbi were close.

How important is defense? Only two of the All-defensive team (Martin and Lewis)(didn't they have a comedy team?_ were named first or second team All-Conference.

I thought Nneka deserved more, even for half a year, maybe a special recognition. She was the best in the Big Twelve until injured (I thought slightly better than Davis). I'm surprised that Donohoe didn't rank higher.

I would agree. I liked Pebley and what she did with TCU. Curiously, it may have worked out for everyone. I thought Mitte was better at Kansas State than at TCU.

On the all freshman team, why does Kristy Wallace have the 2 asteriks by her name? I see what it says right below there, but if she was an unanimous pick, she would be FOY. Is there something I am not seeing here?

That puzzled me too. They must have had two different ballot locations for the awards.

I was rather surprised to see Imani McGee-Stafford on the first team with Kaylon Willaims and Breanna Lewis on the second. Imani only started five games, and her stats were lower than either Kaylon or Breanna.

Start five games and make first unit. Nneka started more and did better.

This happens every year. The coaches always avoid any hint of controversy by just voting for the conference winning coach.

National Coach of the year is often the same way. I always thought it should go to those who do the most with the least.

I wouldn't be surprised if the non-vote for Gabbi was by a specific coach who wanted to try to make her freshman the freshman of the year. Any guesses as to which coach might do that?

I know some will disagree, but I believe Kaylon deserves first team honors. For my money she's the top post player in the league. I realize, however, that a lack of consistency plagued her earlier in the season.

Otherwise, I think the team honors were pretty fair. Notice, I said "team," not coach.

I tend to agree. Kaylon was the best center in the league. With the exception of this last game, Gardner has not been that good against OU.

But, Imani---only starting five games and making first team? Shouldn't that maybe be the sixth man award?

Better than Gardner? I have to disagree.

My two cents are the OU players who won awards were the ones that were most deserving from out team. As far as Kay-Kay not being first team, it's because she disappeared so much in games prior to conference games.

All that said, let me say there is no way that Sherri or the TCU coach are not the coaches of the year this year. When you look at were the teams came from to what they turned into...there's no question.

Kim Mulkey didn't do anything anyone didn't expect from her a year ago and neither did her players.

I call BS on that one.

Like I said: "Some will disagree." ;)

Gardner was higher than KK in most categories in the conference stats. She is an excellent player.

I know some of the stats are influenced by how the team plays, who all you have who can score, etc. So that may not be the perfect way to compare, but I expect a number of the voters look mostly at that to decode.

I'm glad KK at least made second team.

All-in-all, I think it's one of the better teams I've seen in years. We'll all pick and choose at our favorite gripes, but I think they did a good job
