Big 12 Tournament--ugh to 5 straight years in KC

KC is a good location for all six of the remaining Big 8 teams. It probably sucks for fans in Texas... but screw them.

I'm fine rotating between KC and OKC, but don't really see the point in going all the way down to Dallas or to the outer edges of the conference boundaries to the east (St. Louis) or north (anywhere in Iowa).

Dallas has no business hosting the tournament and that fact is evident by the combined 100 fans brought to KC for the mens/womens tournament every year its up here. They don't care about basketball, and sadly enough, OU is almost the same way, although we do bring quite a few womens fans to KC for the womens tourney.

Agreed.... I love it in KC and in OKC... I feel that however, it is the most successful in KC though. With The Spring Center and Municipal in Downtown and the fact that KC is a basketball town. The people in KC will go to ANY game in that tournament, even if the homers, KU and KSTATE and Mizzou, aren't playing and you can't tell me honestly that people in Dallas would show up to a game between Nebraska and Iowa State, in KC they would

The women's venue is widely thought to be sub-par, but the Sprint is sa-weet...

The womens venue is only subpar because it doesn't seat as many as the Myriad, however, the only time the Myriad would be that full for a final is if OU is in the finals. If OU is not in the finals, like 2 years ago, then the final game is minimally attended (like 2 years ago). The fact OU didn't make the finals 2 years ago really took a lot of positives away from the 2007 when we made the final and had the record crowd. I think if OU or OSU had made the final in 2009 and the game had a big crowd, then OKC probably would have been awarded one of the tourneys in the next 3 years.

Municipal is a smaller arena, but when you have smaller crowds which is typically the case for the womens tourney, it doesn't seem as empty. And, it has good sitelines as their really isn't a bad seat in the house.

Now, as far as fan friendliness, you won't get any argument from me that Municipal isn't anything close to the Myriad. 1 crapper in every bathroom is pretty miniscule, but the arena has good sitelines and the seats come right down to the floor.

I like how all the fans in Texas (OU fans, A&M, Tech and UT) are just crapped on at the expense of Jayhawk nation. It's okay for me to drive 1000 miles or so but not vice versa?

How can you say Municipal is sub-par? It's better than anything else the Big 12 uses for Womens basketball

Municipal is one of my favorite places to watch basketball... Every year growing up my family and myself would go to the NAIA tournament there and spend pretty much my entire spring break watching basketball there and watched the early CBE Classics, including an epic upset between Duke and a Dwayne Wade led Marquette squad... Pretty sure i will spend part of my college spring break back there watching the NAIA and late-rounds of the Big 12's...

This what has been discussed on the radio locally in the past. Of course, I have no links to back that up, but it's been said, the coaches prefer the Cox Center.

Plus, the proximity to the men's arena is not ideal like it is in OKC.

Seems like it would be difficult to have the tourney in the Oklahoma City Arena (formerly known as the Ford Center), as it would have to be scheduled around the Thunder.

Local Radio in OKC??? Because then of course they would want the tournament there... and I too agree the one issue with the Ford Center is the Thunder

They were discussing what the Big XII women's coaches said after it went back to KC...

No different than the Big XII baseball tourney and the Redhawks...the Thunder would have more than a year's notice to arrange games and the NBA would accommodate...

exactly, MSG does it for the Big East, AAC did it for the big 12, I think Charlotte is or has done it for the ACC. Its not that big of a deal

I like the arrangement OKC has with the Myriad across the street from the Ford Center, however, Municipal is only 3 blocks from the sprint center, and in those 3 blocks is the P&L district which has 3 hotels, restaurants and shopping.

The proximity given the fact the entertainment is between the 2 arenas cancels out the Myriad being across the street from the Ford Center with the entertainment district (bricktown) 5 blocks away.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know how that would work.

Proximity wise, it is certainly easier for me to get to OKC. Venue wise, I don't think there is much difference between the Sprint Center and the OKC Arena. P&L is nice, but I'm not certain it is better than Bricktown.

Dallas had their chance and no one showed up. Rotate it between OKC and KC, probably the best two locations. Personally, I think the KC venue is far superior of a fan experience when you include the atmosphere in and around the arena.

Have you ever been to the Sprint Center? It's pretty nice...couple it with P&L and you have a great time.

100% agree with this. Dallas should never have it again. KC does a great job with it and always has. OKC was good as well. The homecourt as already stated is way overblown.

For those who've not attended the tourney in OKC, the Cox Center being directly across the street from the OKC Arena (not the Ford any more) is WAAAAY cool. Bricktown is a lot of fun and it continues to grow. Lots of lodging down there now as well. The coaches went on record as saying they LOVED it...

The tournament should rotate locations and the two venues shouldn't be any further apart than they are in KC. Having it in KC 3 or 4 years in a row followed by one year in OKC sucks. I don't care if it rotates only between OKC & KC or if other locations are included but giving KC the majority of the years isn't right.

I agree, but OKC really didn't do itself any favors 2 years ago when the men lost early and the women lost in the semis. Nobody attended either final game compared to the turnout in KC for mens. That did more to push the conference to move it to KC for 5 straight years than anything else.

The conference likes having it in OKC to capitalize on the womens crowds but as we saw 2 years ago, if OU isn't in the final then the crowd for the final isn't that big. At that point, they are actually making less money because the mens game isn't as well attended as when it's in KC.

If you want it back in OKC, the next time it's there, try to get the arenas full for both finals if OU isn't in the game and that will help.

This.

And Bricktown sucks, P&L is in a different league for that sort of environment.
