Bo Ryan Retiring Effective Immediately

My guess is there's a health issue involved.

He tried retiring this summer and admin begged him to stay. I think the grind is just too much for 68yrs old

I did not realize what a good job he did at Wisconsin. Very impressive to take a school with only 7 NCAA tournament appearances and then make it every year as the head coach (14 consecutive years). It always bugs me when some OU fans say things like making the tournament every year and winning 20 games is not big deal. It is a big deal. It is hard to be that consistent and the coached that do it are both rare and special.

apparently he wanted his ast coach to get the job this summer and barry alverez declined ..

so this is his way of getting the ast coach ( that has been with him forever) an audition to be the head coach ..

That seems like an odd thing to say. Lots of guys have done it at 68 and plenty of jobs are a grind. Coach K is 68 and Boeheim is 71. To me it is simply does a person want to do it. Some people would be lost without their jobs. Others would prefer to spend time with family, friends, traveling, golfing, etc. I really don't see age as that big of a factor and think it is more about what a person wants.

Barry Alvarez is a colossal douche, and the school has to get rid of him. They've had two straight successful head football coaches make lateral, at best, moves (Bielema to Arkansas, Andersen to Oregon State). Madison is a great town, athletics have great support, and it's a place you can win at, yet they can't keep coaches. Not a coincidence.

they don't have the money (donor base) to pay high coaches or ast coach salarys ...

that is a president and regents issue much more than it is barry alverez ..

Sure the money thing is an issue but cosches love it there - Alvarez pretty much acts like a dictator and it's his way or no way. He is a major part of the problem there.

How can that be? That is a significantly larger school in terms of enrollment than OU. The Big Ten has good contracts, plus the Big Ten Network. They claim they were 15th in football attendance in 2009.http://www.uwbadgers.com/news/2009/1/2/Football_Badgers_rank_15th_in_attendance.aspx

I am not sure the year but that says they have the 8th most revenue and spend the fourth highest amount of sports.

Several guys have done it at 68. Not a lot. Just telling you what I know.

He was the last college coach to not speak with AAU coaches. He only spoke to HS coaches.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but in this case, Barry Alvarez should decide who the next Wisconsin coach should be. If I'm an AD, there is a 0% chance I'm letting any coach choose their successor.

The buck stops with Barry, definitely. But I think you have to make the case for continuity in a system as regimented as Bo's. The players on the roster were recruited and conditioned to play Bo Ryan Basketball, and that doesn't always translate in other contexts (how many Ryan alumni have lasted 4 or more years in the NBA? Alando Tucker, Devin Harris, Michael Finley, aaaaaand?). Point being, the guy can trust his top lieutenant with the roster and if you're looking at replacing him, I would give his assessment a lot of weight.
