Listening to AM-1400. Teddy Lehman is saying that Bob Stoops is retiring.

There may be a press conference at 2:30 today. Not sure.

Update:

Now Teddy says he is hearing that the press conference at OU will be at 5:30 today.

My brother called me and said he read it on ESPN. My brother also said Lincoln Reilly will be the new head coach.

If true, Bob had a heck of a run.

Yes indeed. Bob had a wonderful run. He won more football games than anyone else at OU. That is something.

Another site says he was diagnosed with a heart condition a few weeks back and though it was thought he might stick it out for another year or so, I guess he didn't want to take any chances (his father died on the young side from a heart attack, IIRC).

I'm taking this news pretty hard. I hoped we had another ten years left with him.

I think this is an EXCELLENT move for both OU and Stoops. Both just accomplished the smoothest major D1 coaching change I have seen in years ... almost like this had been planned all along. And I dont think it was.

Bob is ready to spend the senior year with those boys. The team is primed for a few years with quality talent and look at the QB situation! And the program is ready for new blood. I'd keep stoops in a heartbeat but I am also excited to see Lincoln take over.

I think this works out pretty darn well overall. To me it's been obvious Riley was being groomed. I figured he was gonna go for 2 years then come back to be HC. This just moves the timetable up. I think they woulda left Mike interim waiting for Riley to be ready if they didnt think he was. He can still be appointed assistant now. He still has plenty to contribute.

This is fake news. We know this because Herman told all the recruits Riley is leaving.

Sad day for sooner land but hopeful for good things with Lincoln. Gonna miss Bob.

Thank you to coach Stoops for all that he has done for our university.

Great news. Excited to see where Riley takes us.

Thanks Bob....we were privileged to have you. Go enjoy some time with your family....you've earned it.

Surprised Stoops didn't coach this season to make a run at a second title and go out on top of the world, but the timing was right for a change. Stoops mailed it in about 7 years ago, and the program took a big step back. Then he cleaned house and brought it back to the top, and saved his legacy in the process. Think he was just tired of the grind, and never really was comfortable with the way that things have changed in the social media era.

Bob was a big fan and ally of the BBall program. Even though OU has been, is, and always will be a football school... The tradition of OU football has no doubt helped OU basketball over the years. Sampson embraced it and always talked about it helping recruiting. Hosting bball recruits for visits on football game days is pretty powerful. Bob would come into the locker room and encourage the guys. He was always at games... He cared! Thanks Bob!

It definitely caught me off guard as well, but I think it speaks to the quality of a man he is. I honestly believe he'd rather hand the team off in excellent condition rather than go out as a national champion but leave the next guy with a reloading process. He's a Sooner through and through.
