Bola alade?

You guys are crazy. The kids that walk on in sports at OU are far, far superior to the typical students.

typical student, yes. but I'm sure you could find quite a few students at OU that can play better than franchilla

The walk ons are always athletic. They would destroy you or anyone else in basketball but for the few guys that played college basketball that participate.

This is not the same argument.

Quite a few? I doubt it. A few, possibly and the majority likely play for Bob Stoops. Franchilla was an All District player at Highland Park. I don't know how many kids make All District but certainly it means you are more than just a solid high school basketball player. He is also a special case in that his father is well connected. The kid is a much better basketball player than you realize.

You get that he is practicing with Hield, Hornbeak, Cousins, Woodard, and Booker? Kruger isn't letting him on the court to waste time.

we are not talking about "typical" students .. .

we are talking about the 5 walkons vs the 5 other best basketball players on OU's campus that are non "athletes" ...

so 5 of 25+ thousand ... not the typical students ..

for example .. a friend of mine in college was offered a basketball scholarship at Drexel (D1 full ride) but he knew basketball was not in his future and was a national merit at OU ...he was better then every OU walkon and like some of the guys on ship ...

there are not tons of examples like this ... but there are 10 or more in every class ..

That's an argument neither side will be able to prove.

To me, the real debate may whether Alade is the typical walk on who contributes as a practice player only, or is he a kid who can compete for meaningful minutes at some point?

Walk ons at other schools have been known to develop into an integral part of a team's success or even start. I can't think of any at OU, because most aren't recruited walk ons our coaches make a special effort to sign. They're kids who grew up as OU fans and wearing the C&C is more important to them than a scholarship. Naturally, that would not be the case with a kid who can't afford to attend OU without some form of financial support.

Alade looks really good in his highlight video. He may never start or be a major contributor during his career. All I'm saying is that he appears to be a cut or two above the walk ons OU usually signs.

He averaged 5 and 5 in high school.

You've never seen the kid play...there are more than a few All-city players running around OU who never put on a college uniform. Out of your element Donnie.

come on he averaged 5.9 points and 5 ast a game ... good numbers sure but there are well over 100 non athletes at OU that are better basketball players then he is ..

another friend of mine was asked by kelvin to walk on he was 6'7 he was not a fan of how Kelvin ran his walk on program so he declined (later his brother became an OU walkon under Kelvin )

I agree that some things can't always be proven. But, failing to understand that the walkons would beat the student body all stars by 20 defies understanding. All of those guys could have played college ball somewhere.

As far as Alade, I doubt that he is coming to OU as a walkon just for grins. I'll check into it the best I can.

Actually, I was specifically addressing the guy that was surprised at this kids athletic ability and everyone else that participates in this forum.

You happen to know one very unique person. Do you realize how small of a percentage of people have the athletic ability to play division one basketball and are National Merit scholars?

Who cares? You are still missing the point. You don't have to be a NMS to turn down a college basketball scholarship somewhere to be a student at OU or any other school.

Happens. All. The. Time.

Exactly.

No it doesn't. It happens in rare cases. Most people don't turn down a scholarship worth $20K to $50K per year.

Here is the experience I'm speaking from. There were a lot of really good bball players in the Tulsa area when I graduated. Kids that played on good teams, and lead their teams, leagues, and in some cases, their entire classes in scoring. I know for a fact a few of those guys chose education over playing college ball.

It's like the stupid argument that the NBA has all of the best basketball players. No they don't. They have most of the best, but how often do you see great college players never get a sniff of the NBA? Different leagues, different skill sets. Being good in HS doesn't mean you will automatically be good in college. And kids that flew under the radar in HS, can bloom into great college players. And along the same lines, kids that simply didn't enjoy organized basketball in HS, or that developed late and missed scholarship opportunities, can be pretty darn good bball players walking around campuses as regular students.

I've played pick up ball over the years with a lot of great players that never played organized basketball at all, for various reasons.

Yep, there are tons of cases. Two of my pledge brothers alone, one played for Creighton for a year, before transferring back to OU cause he is from here, wanted to work towards his degree, and he was a 6'4 PG.

the other started for Katy HS (not easy if you know that school) as a 6'3 PG who dominated at the Huff as he was either too big, or too athletic for anyone guarding him.

That's just two guys I personally knew. You add in just the other greek system top players from intramural before you even get to the independents who ball at the huff daily, and there is some pretty good talent out there walking around.

gave you two more cases I knew myself. You should see some of the guys on other teams in the fraternity intramural.

Then go look at some of the other kids that play at the huff. It all adds up to a pretty good starting 5

denver we usually agree, but in this case you are dead wrong.... fran sucks and would get dominated by around 80% of the students that are athletic..

now that being said.... this kid Alade looks like a solid player and austin Mankin and that kid given a scholly, would probably be good players too, but other than that, the rest of the kids are nothing special

It's not an absolute for either stance, not all walk-ons are created equal.

When I was wrapping up at OU, there was a kid who went his first two years there but then transferred to be at UCO...ended up making all-conference as a senior I believe. Fraschilla isn't nearly as good as him, not even close.

I am not wrong. Fran is an exception due to his father but beyond that he would be playing A intra murals at OU and I have no doubt about that.

"playing"-- i guess if you mean passing to the kids who would be doing the scoring--then sure.. there are tons of pure students around the nation at colelges that are lightyears ahead of fran jr.. that is all
