Bola alade?

It's not an absolute for either stance, not all walk-ons are created equal.

When I was wrapping up at OU, there was a kid who went his first two years there but then transferred to be at UCO...ended up making all-conference as a senior I believe. Fraschilla isn't nearly as good as him, not even close.

Do you know what anecdotal evidence is? Franschilla might be the weakest of the walkons, but, he was a decent HS player. And he is a lot better now than when he came in.

Non basketball players can beat basketball players at a lot of things. But, basketball isn't one of them.

You are making a long distance mistake by undervaluing the abilities of the current group of walkons.

I'm not undervaluing the group, just one player, who was included in blanket statement from earlier. Like I said, a non-athlete at OU, left after two years of playing at the Huff to go to UCO, was all-conference in the Lone Star (arguably one of the best D-II conferences in the nation) and even played overseas for a while.

It's not a long distance assumption at all, I have been on both sides of the coin at two different institutions.

Walk-ons are not always the best players. Sometimes its what they can do for the team though. James is a great ambassador for the team, both on court, practice and with the media. Yes it helps who is dad is, but he has to carry himself.

On the other side, I have 2 stories about walk ons. A friend of mine never played any highschool ball but grew 3 inches from junior to senior year in hightschool was spotted playing basketball at the Huff and was asked if he wanted to go to a walk on tryout for OU.

Another attempted walkon was back the early year of Sampson, he went through several days and felt he had a great chance of making it, but then he was not strong enought to bench a certain weight a number of times the coaches set for him and they dismissed him on the spot. He felt it was there way of getting rid of him because he outplayed others.

You understand that people don't just walkon when they take the notion. They have to tryout, meet minimum standards, and mostly get cut. Many of them have worked out for months hoping to get their game in enough shape to make a cut. But, they don't.

This group of walkons is an upgrade over the previous two years. I mentioned that a couple of times in those early practice reports. They go against what will probably turnout to be the 2nd best team from the best conference in the country every day. Sometimes they look pretty good doing it.

ok

Why are so many referring to James Fraschilla as Fran?

You are failing to recognize that the typical walk on is like this kid, Beau Gerber, Barry Honore, Mankin, etc. They are very good basketball players just not as good as the scholarship kids playing in the Big XII.

That was not your original claim...you said any walk-on would "destroy" other students.

you clearly have never played ball with the walkon's and overvalue some of their ability and athleticism .. and at the same time massively undervalue the athletic ability of those on campus that what one reason or another don't play sports at OU

Barry Honore was a great walk on .. he was a scholarship player at a d1 school ..

in no universe was Beau Gerber a "very good" basketball player ..

Kelvin was very specific in what he wanted in a Walk on ... and basketball talent was NOT at the top of the list ..

First team Class 5A All State as a senior and second team as a junior in Kansas isn't very good? 16.1 points and 11.i rebounds as a senior in high school isn't very good? Clearly we have a much different opinion about what is very good.

Capel gave him a scholarship so Jeff Capel thought he was pretty good.

you think him getting a scholarship had anything to do with his basketball skill?

actually I said

The walk ons are always athletic. They would destroy you or anyone else in basketball but for the few guys that played college basketball that participate.

When I said "that participate" I was intending to reference our group of internet posters. However, I am comfortable with the statement towards the student body as a whole. Certainly it is possible a few kids would prove me wrong but 99% of the time my statement is correct.

If you can't appreciate that people playing sports at OU, including walk ons, are truly gifted, I don't know what to tell you.

YOu are just being silly as this point. I am completely comfortable with saying anyone that earns First Team All State honors at a large school is an exceptional basketball player. It doesn't mean they are an NBA talent or even a D-1 talent but it does make them exceptional.
