As impressive as trae young has been I think manek may have been slightly overlooked. He was very impressive on this trip. His shot is pure and he is very good at finding his spots off the ball. I was also impressed with his off ball defense and his rotations.
What is the story on him? why didn't he have a bunch of big time offers? did he just commit early so other teams didn't pursue him very hard.

either way i think we will be very good and if everyone comes back could be legit championship contenders when young and manek are sophomores

Playing like a seasoned vet, very impressive. We're going to make some noise this year.

He will not RS. If he can put on 10 lbs and get stronger, his minutes could be significant.

Ty Lazenby is probably the only real RS candidate.

close to 0% chance ty lazenby redshirts

Why would you say that? (Besides your decorated history of making very assertive statements)

Right now OU has 5 guards ahead of Lazenby:

Trae Young (starting PG)
Jordan Shepherd (back up PG and could go small with TY if needed)
Kam McGusty (likely a starter at Guard)
Rashard Odomes (likely a starter at Guard)
Christian James (likely first guard off the bench)

With 4/5 of the above being "proven" and seasoned players and the other being Trae Young then I don't see a whole lot of minutes left for Lazenby.

Thus it is plausible that Lazenby either requests to RS or Kruger suggests it.

Personally, I don't think he will either, but it far from "close to 0% chance" especially when you consider that Doo and possible Manek could play the 3 in a pinch.

The overlooking was mainly from the local media. Brady was a top 100 recruit on multiple websites, but the Oklahoma media was so fixated on Trae that no one noticed. Also, committing early had something to do with it as well. When he committed, which I believe was at the end of his sophomore or early junior year, I know that Kansas was starting to show interest. We are lucky that Lon offered so early and made a great impression right off the bat.

Usually JUCO kids never RS and if they do it's because of injury or they are a project will a very high ceiling (a Manyang type).

If Manek/Doolittle can play the 3 at all this year Lazenby would receive no minutes. I also agree that you don't redshirt juco players. That would just keep him around for an extra year when his scholarship could go to a better high school recruit.

I just see Lazenby playing mop up time and possibly a decent amount early on in the season against the non-conference teams.

I think Manek will back up Doolittle at the 4. He's really good and can help even if he isn't scoring well. He has a good all-around game. Doubt he plays much at the 3. James will backup Odomes there.

Lazenby could help some because he can score in a variety of ways. Maybe McGusty or James is having an off night. Next year might be even tougher for the guards. They bring everyone back and add Bienemy ..... who may be good enough to fight for a starting role as a freshman. Lots of quality, experienced depth down the line.

Exactly. If they aren't good enough to help you, we don't want them clogging up a scholarship for an extra year.

You are probably right. I just get sick of BS's emphatic know-it-all drop-ins on here. Bugs me.

The good news for Ty is that there is a need for a spot up shooter off the bench if he is the type that can come in cold and rain threes. Takes a special type of player to do that though.

Oh and Brady is good. 🙂

I think Hannas might redshirt. No to lazenby and Manek is too good

He just looks too valuable to me to redshirt him. He is much more fundamentally sound than I expected and seems to be happy with physical contact. Think he will help against some Big 12 Cs.

yeah i know but someone has to sit...who is it going to be? CAn't go 12 deep

I think Freeman's minutes dip and Lazenby plays sparingly.

Not sure how Lon will balance Muni/Lattin/Polla at the 5 but I just think Polla brings us something that will help in situations.

Good problem to have and gives the team insurance from the injury bug.

I have cautious optimism with both Manek and Young but especially Manek for this year. They are both frosh but Manek played small high school basketball and I just think at some point he's going to hit a wall. Maybe not, maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am but I like what I've seen so far. I just don't want to put too heavy of expectations on him.

Reeves at OSU, Roberts at OSU, and Minor at OU were all small school basketball players and had excellent freshman seasons (Minor didn't play much at first but exploded on the scene late in the year; probably should have played more). So, it's not out of the realm of possibility that both have great seasons but I'm just not expecting it. :oldwt356:

you dont know that. I have seen coaches keep an extra body for sake of potential injuries ... especially in seasons where they think they have a chance to do very well.

it is wise not to deal in absolutes
