Bryce Thompson Transferring

Boynton gets his guys to play hard but he’s not a great coach. Their offense is a hot mess. OU will beat osu ass regardless of BT. OU has a better team and a better coach. I’ll take that every damn day.

That has always been one of the biggest questions about Moser.....how attractive will his offense be to elite scoring guards? We'll know soon enough, b/c he and his staff are putting out a bunch of offers to area guards that are just that, really good scorers with other good offers. Hopefully Moser changes his offense a bit with better talent, but I'm not sure next year is going to showcase that with the a) the guards we have on the roster, and b) a big man like T. Groves that will likely have the offense running through him a lot of the time.

I'm hopeful over time it (perception of Moser's offense to talented scoring guards) won't be an issue, but it might be for the next couple of years.

My take is.....we want that big time scoring guard if we can find him....but it is WAY harder to find quality bigs.....if we showcase a quality big for a year or two we will have a much easier time finding quality bigs in the future.

That is just me.

I hope you are right, but in fairness, they did beat us twice a couple months back. This doesn’t appear to be your Travis Ford’s Pokes we’re going up against.

So, do we save the scholly or is there someone else available this late in the game?

Agreed, but anyone that watched or went to the game in Norman understands it wasn't Boynton's offense or coaching that beat us as much as Cade Cunningham driving to his right and getting whatever he wanted, including calls, in the second half and overtime. There wasn't anything really sophisticated about the coaching, and all about CC not Boynton.

As far as the 'ship, with the transfer portal probably opening up schollies every year regardless of the roster classes, I say we fill it. If you can't get that guy with 2-3 years left, which is ideal, get a one-year player that can help the team this year as the coaching staff has more time to build next year's team.

With the portal, I am not sure there is any reason to sandbag scholarships.

I don’t disagree with what you are saying but I think a good example of a coach adapting to getting players with more talent, that I have used in the past is John Beilein moving from West Virginia to when he got the job at Michigan. He ran a 1-3-1 Defense that a lot of people questioned whether or not that style would work when he moved on to a bigger program in a bigger conference at the time. Obviously all of those questions were answered when he almost primarily ran Man to man during his time in Michigan. I know this because I loved his defense at West Virginia and was hoping to see it at a bigger program and then he changed primarily to man.

Obviously we are talking about a different side of the ball, but he also ran a lot of gimmick offenses that were hard for people to stop when he was at West Virginia that he then adapted at Michigan.

Whether or not Moser adapt his style remains to be seen but I assume that he is smart enough to know and to tell recruits that he can open it up a little bit more based on the talent that he brings in. But again that’s just my opinion. I don’t think he will go away from his system completely but I would assume we see either more plays called specifically for players or more iso stuff at times Based on the ability of the players on the floor.

I don't disagree. But if you are a top 25ish player in the country with NBA aspirations, do you take Moser at his word and try to visualize what that might look like, or do you go somewhere where you can point to multiple seasons of a team running the offense you want to be a part of?

Again, it’s a great question because people questioned the same about Beilein. I haven’t looked back but I would assume the overall ranking of his classes increased some if not dramatically from West Virginia to when he was in his later years at Michigan. He did take them to a final four/national championship game With the guys he was able to recruit and obviously the cupboard was not bare when he left.

With the fire and passion we’ve already seen and by all accounts the fantastic assistant coaching staff on paper at his disposal I will be shocked if Moser is not able to attract some talented players at a minimum of four stars semi-regularly if not a couple five stars during his time at Oklahoma.

From a high level recruit, I could see a skilled big or wing attracted to Moser more than a ball dominant guard.

Which might be okay.

If I recall this board and game threads with Trae Young and Austin Reaves, ball-dominant guards aren't always the most popular or effective.

I'm REALLY curious to see what kind of bigs Moser goes after and lands. Neither Krutwig nor T. Groves were highly recruited, or are overly athletic. Is he going to go after some same kind of players? Guys that may be 3* guys but fit what he wants? Or is he going to find talented bigs that are also more athletic, and get them to Norman? I'm very interested to see how that plays out, b/c ALL of Moser's success has been with Krutwig as his starting center.

I suspect we won't see Moser going after big athletic kids with limited developed skills or a limited basketball IQ. I know at least Sooner04 and myself will be happy about that. :)

Groves at the time moser got him was very very highly recruited ..

We dont get top 25 players very often.. nor does Moser need to. Hes an actual coach. He will make the guys he does get better and make real basketball players, not just get athletes to try to play basketball. He made a final four with i bet 0 top 250 guys.

The refs were wearing Cade Cunningham endorsed underwear for both games.

We've been very lucky; we've had "actual coaches" for 35 of the past 40 years. Nice that we have a new coach who should continue and build on that tradition.

FWIW...

I play ball on Thursday nights...old man ball but we've been doing it 30 years...most are pretty "knowledgeable" bball guys. We finally got back to playing and they all thought OU hired a very good coach.

Ark/mu/ku/duke are schools these guys follow....so there is that!:woot

I'm excited for the change and to see how it goes.

Here’s to hoping he goes O-fer vs OU the remainder of his career! Be especially nice if Goldwire, Gibson, and Harkless shut him completely down!
