Cameron Clark is our top rated talent

Cameron Clark isn't nearly as good as most of us thought he'd be and if he's our best player next year, we're not very good. He's got the game of a big guy but the size of a swingman. He's not nearly as athletic as some would like to think he is. He's not really able to get his own shot by putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the rim. He's a 6'5" jump shooter whose range extends to about 18 feet max.

He can't score on bigger defenders in the post and isn't quick enough or a good enough shooter to score on smaller defenders on the wing or in the backcourt. His ball handling skills prevent him from being a real backcourt player.

I wish he was better than he is and I, at one time, thought he was going to be really good as well. He's a nice role player, but not much more. Hopefully he can extend his shooting range prior to next season and become a legitimate outside shooter. Short of that, he's not going to be a ton of help.

Cameron probably was a bit overrated coming out of high school, but with the recent turn of events, I decided to go back and visit some of the videos of his senior year and it's easy to see why so many people were so impressed. It may just be my opinion, but the difference between the player Clark projected to be and the player he is now is confidence. When Clark is/was confident and assertive, he looks much closer to the player many thought he could be. Clark as a freshman showed good potential, but when you are a freshman, on a losing team and then go through a coaching change that results in a change in the way you are taught to play it's easy to see how a kid's confidence could be shaken. Not to mention that Cam doesn't seem to be a natural "leader". He is capable of looking the part at times, but I think that player would only surface if Cam was put into a situation where the team and coaching staff force him into that kind of role. Now, I don't know if that will ever happen, but if it did and Cam was able to get close to the player he was projected to be then it would be very good for OU. I haven't given up on the kid and I still think he has a chance to blossom if the coaching staff can just get his head right.

Clark got his rating based on athleticism. I said at the time we signed him he was raw, and probably a bit overrated. He just isn't very skilled when it comes to comparing him to other guys rated where he was. He'd be a much better player somewhere like VCU, where he could defend, and get easy hoops around the bucket. At OU, he is simply a good energy guy off the bench that can occasionally knock down some jumpers.
