Coach Capel is in over his head? That's your opinion. Even though these recruits haven't worked out. He has still put Oklahoma back on the national map as far as that aspect. He took his team to the Great 8. His hiring kept Taylor Griffin here, which helped in getting Blake. As a coach he has a good system. He just hasn't been able to get an identity for that system with good consistent players. You also must be in the camp that thinks no one would hire him right now. You'd better think again. He could could get a job easily right now. Jeff Capel just had a bad year and some bad players that he couldn't count on. He has committed any violations or found guilty of any wrong doing. John Blake had no clue whatsoever. At least Jeff does. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!
Prior to the past few months, OU was on the national map since 1983 when Wayman Tisdale placed us squarely on the national map. We were a fixture until this season, even with the mediocre season in 2007.
If anything, we are more off the national map now than we have been in 27 years.
I am in the camp that thinks a BCS program would not hire him right now, and probably some of the more prominent mid-majors. That's not because of coaching or recruiting but because of all the issues (agent/financial advisor) with Gallon and now WW.
Regarding Blake and Capel...a few comparisons apply. Both are considered good recruiters, both can relate to young kids, Blake had a hard time finding his style and a direction he wanted to go on offense and so far I'd say Capel has the same issue, IMO. Both could recruit talent but had a hard time molding that talent into a team. Blake had a hard time recruiting QB's and with TMG and depending on the PG position in the future we may be able to say the same thing about Capel but I'm not ready to go that far because he did recruit the kid from VCU.
Off the court, I think Capel is light years better than Blake. Way more polished, way more intelligent, and a better image as the head of a major D1 program.
