Capel will be here next year

Well since it's pretty much impossible to argue with "what if", I'll just leave that.

I in no way expected us to have an "all-star team" this season. What I DID expect is to be somewhere in the neighborhood of a .500 basketball team. Up until this point it's looking like this team is going to struggle to reach 12 wins, and even that could be a stretch. Couple that with a 13-18 record last year, and yeah I am very concerned.

I am going to say what I have said numerous times in this thread, but you refuse to address: he gets one more year. If he turns things around and makes the tourney, awesome. No one will be happier than I. If he doesn't, then we need a change. Missing the tournament 4 out of 6 years at the University of Oklahoma is not acceptable.

Did you look at our schedule, I never thought we were going to go above 500.
You haven't been talking about him missing next year, you have been talking about this year. This year he sucks. I bet you were one of the many that was saying he was a great coach a couple of years ago.

Ok...Blame Capel...He can take the blame. That doesn't mean that he didn't take us to an elite 8 and that he can't coach. We may be lucky to get 12 wins but I also bet that this is probably the youngest, inexperience team OU has ever had.

And if you ever read Coach K's book, he will even thank NCST for saving his job by them winning the National Championship. He said if they didn't win the National Championship, Duke would have fired him b/c of itchy trigger finger fans like you.

I'd say Kelvins 2004 team was much younger than this group. By the end of the season we had 2 or 3 true frosh starting plus a true soph who was injured. That team narrowly missed the NCAA tourney and won a game in the NIT.

This team if it were better coached could win some games with the present talent but that's why Capel needs to go.

I didn't say "above .500", I said "in the neighborhood". Heck I would be satisfied with 14 or 15 wins. I don't think that's asking too much.

I have talked about giving him another year and that year being "the" year no less than three times in this thread. Sorry you missed it.

I would hope Sampson is a better coach. He has been around a lot longer and was a darn good coach. Thats why its hard to follow the legend... That guy has a hard job.

The thing I really don't like most about Capel is that thing I really think did Tubbs in his last few years. We really don't play defense at all anymore. It doesn't look like we are really coached to play defense. We are terrible at recognizing how to do simple things on defense especially after the first couple of games. And really it wasn't that much different when Blake was here we just had the length to make up for a lot of things.

What is your profession... If you dont mind me asking?

LOL this might be the hardest I've ever laughed on this forum. If anyone was wondering I am SeniorSooner's dad and yes he is a frat boy who lives off my money. He also has a room in the basement where he posts on internet forums, plays D&D and has never kissed a girl. Stereotypes ftw!

That 2004 team had 5 guys returning compared to 3 this year.
of the 5 guys returning, 2 were seniors and 1 was a junior.
This years team return 1 senior and 2 sophmores.
They returned 35.7 ppg while this team returned 20.9ppg
Of the 5 guys returning, 4 of them started 11 or more games with Detrick Redshirting that year.
That team also brought in a McD AA PG.

Thats not to mention that their non-conference schedule wasn't near as tough as this years. And their conference wasn't near as tough either.

So that team goes to the NIT and you expect this team to do what...be just as good or better.

Eddie Suttons last year at OSU had all those new kids there with all the talent after losing all but 3 guys from the team before. Sutton, known for defense and not turning the ball over, had one of the worst seasons when it came to defense and turning the ball over.

Thats b/c that was also the youngest, inexperience group to ever play at OSU. Why did they not perform as well...b/c young, inexperience teams don't play defense and they turn the ball over. Here we have probably the youngest, inexperience OU team in history...and what a suprise...they don't play defense and they turn the ball over.

Capel's teams have never been great defensive squads. Lots of that could be hidden because we could put the ball in the hoop during the BG years. I mean besides Austin Johnson and Taylor, there really wasn't a superb defener on the squad.

Boys he isnt going any where. he is here to stay at least another year. He is a good coach, its just going to take some time to right this ship after the exit of TMG and Tiny...

End of Story!

Good grief are you serious?

Stupid argument. Here are the facts. I can make this easy for you. I base my opinion on wins and losses. Lost 12 out of the last 14 last year. 5 losses in a row this year. 37 double digit losses under Capel. Will take the team to post season 2 times out of 5. 3 of the worst seasons in 60 years.

THIS IS YEAR 5 END OF STORY

I base my on Facts as well. Capel a great job at VC, took over a program that was headed downhill after Kelvin left. All recruits left, didn’t have much to work with. Timing was great, BG came on board for 2 years (enough said there) took a chance with tiny and tmg, got burned... Now its time to get headed in the right direction

Every coach struggles at times correct? Still waiting for my answer from soonersenior about the Coach K comparison...

You guys are such front runners; you are what is wrong with society today. Kids aren’t disciplined anymore, you sugarcoat everything for them, don’t make them have consequences for their actions... etc...

Haven’t you made mistakes at your job? Did they fire you automatically?
So does it say in his contract that he has 5 years? Or are you Joe c and have the power to fire him?

Honest statement. It is how he/she comes across.

Still waiting for my Coach K answer? Based on SS agrument, he should have been fired.

So, are you saying Capel is going to lead this team to a 2nd place finish in the NCAA tourney in year 6? That's what Coach K did.

If not, then your comparison needs to end there.

Did you ever think that after Coach K's 3rd year at Duke, his lineup consisted of 4 frosh by the name of Johnny Dawkins, Tommy Amaker, Mark Alarie and Jay Bilas? Those 4 guys led Duke to the final game in their sr. year.

Capel doesn't have a single player of the caliber of Amaker, Alarie, or Dawkins. I'd say Fitz is on par with Bilas, or could be by the time he graduates.

Also, 4-5 years before, Duke was on a string of losing seasons not 20+ post-season appearances. So, again no comparison as to the status of the program before Coach K entered as to how OU was when Capel came in.

Crap I hope he leads us to a 2nd place finish... You think OU was headed in the right directin when Capel took over? Losing all the recruits? Probation... etc.. What was he left with? We all know he screwed up with TMG and Tiny...
But doesnt he get a chance to be the man we hired him to be?

I think OU wasn't headed in the wrong direction when he took over. A top 5 recruiting class in the bag, but he couldn't close the deal. Each player was urged by the ex-coach to keep their commitment, yet Capel couldn't close it.

The probation was a slap on the hand. It didn't prevent us from postseason play or tv appearances or anything like this.

He was left with talent that could get to the NCAA tournament or at least the NIT. He failed to do it. That's on him.

After 5 years, he can't become the man we hired him to be, but that's OK. When you go on the cheap like we did, you get what you paid for. It's time to cut our losses and try someone else who is a proven winner.

Not to mention Duke's run success in the late 70's was built off Foster getting transfers from other schools, not recruiting.

You keep throwing out Tiny and TMG...but that are only two guys. He has massively underrecruited his mid level players who should be staying 3-4 years and contributing at a higher clip as they get older.

Neysmith, Early, Patillo, Clark, Hardrick, Maze, Allen, Cannon, etc. Those are the type of players you need to stay for their full eligibility to have continued success. Even Kentucky has guys amongst the McDAAs who contribute. You need that experience to carry over...we don't have that.
