Let me preface my post by saying that I am someone who enjoys college sports more than American professional sports. That being said, the NBA is way more fun to watch than college basketball right now. I didn't really follow the NBA much until the Thunder came to town, but now that I'm paying attention, I'm pretty well hooked. Some might argue that the NBA is more fun to watch because the players are better, but that's only part of it. NFL players are way better than college football players, but college football remains the superior game. In my opinion, the big difference is the shot clock. The NBA's 24 second shot clock forces teams to get the ball down the court, get into their offense, and put up a quick shot. They don't pass it around the perimeter for half a minute like the college kids do. I'm not saying college basketball has to adopt a 24 second clock, but at the very least teams should only have 28-30 seconds to put up a shot. 35 seconds is way too long. It really detracts from the quality of the product.

All that being said, I wasn't *****ing when Kelvin's teams were winning games 60-55 on their way to 25 win seasons. I only take notice of college basketball's deficiencies when we suck.

I don't think shortening the shot clock will have a huge impact. How often do teams really work it down to the last five seconds anyway? Maybe only a few times per game.

I think they should at least go to the 30 second clock that the women's game uses. And, the women's game needs to adopt the 10 second back court rule. There's no reason not to make both changes.

fran frashilla has gotten to him!

but frashilla does make a good point about a shorter shot clocks at all levels coming up. high school, aau, college. makes kids better under pressure and become quicker with decisions.

IMO a lower shot clock promotes more 1 on 1 and isolation basketball. This makes coaching less important and stunts overall player development. Again just my opinion.

I like the shot clock right where it's at

Me too.

One of the great things about college basketball is the huge diversity in style. Reducing the shot clock would restrict that.

not if you have a disciplined head coach. and it would make our pg's bring the ball up quicker and not be teetering on a 10-second call half of the time.

i don't care. but i can see the argument for it.

then your former wouldn't affect the latter. if you say teams aren't in danger of shot clock violations, then a 30 second shot clock isn't going to kill that diversity you like. it would just go with what fran argues about kids learning to make quicker decisions.

if it would mean more movement off the ball because of less time to work with, i'm for it. again, i don't care. i just felt like arguing.

First post was regarding a small reduction, like to 30.

Second was in response to adopting the NBA clock.

Obviously how I thought about those two posts in my head wasn't expressed in what I wrote here...

The NBA is unbelievably more entertaining right now.

Charge circle, more space, shorter shot clock, etc contribute to that. But mainly college hoops sucks right now, and the NBA is really good.

I would rather watch Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, and Ray Allen take on Jameer Nelson, Dwight Howard, Jason Richardson, and Gilbert Arenas than watch Cade Davis, Big Puma, and Cameron Clark take on Keiton Page, Marshall Moses, and Reger Dowell.

College hoops sucks right now.

really, i don't think a clock under 30 seconds in high school would be a good idea. it would either look like geek said about too much one-on-one, or a bunch of headless chickens running around. it's hard enough for me to watch high school ball as it is.

The officiating in college basketball is also atrocious. They let the players play in the NBA.

I think some of the problems is the one and dones in college basketball.

I agree with having an MLB like rule. If you want to go out before HS you can go pro then. But if you choose college you have to stay 2 or 3 years. I would make them stay 3 but 2 would be better than one and duns like we have now.

This.

The NBA can get away with it b/c they have better players.

The women's game can get away with it b/c of the pace.

If you shorten the men's clock, your going to see a bunch of scrubs chunking up wild shots at the end of the clock. That doesn't appeal to me.

I like the shot. It allows a team to control pace, which creates opportunities to beat more talented teams.
