Congratulations to Northern Iowa

Now that's funny. And sad at the same time. :facepalm

Well, it was a sad year for OU men's basketball, so I guess many of us lived through Northern Iowa. If there was an ESPY for OU fans "most enjoyable victory", the nominees would be:

1) OU beats Utah in overtime on the road
2) OU beats rival OSU at home
3) OU beats rival Texas on "Wayman Tisdale Day"
4) Northern Iowa upsets Kansas in the NCAA Tournament

Based on the number of posts and threads, #4 wins by a landslide. Yes, that's nothing for us to brag about, so hopefully it will be another 30 years before we act like Oklahoma State football fans and be more excited about our rival losing than us winning.

It appears to be complicated for you so I just won't comment anymore. Keep dreaming. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!
This is your second non-comment in this thread. You are going to have to type more clearly, becaue this is jibberish.

The historical implications make it a big upset. It is similar to the OU/BSU Fiesta Bowl. Boise was, arguably, as good or better than that OU team, but because it was a "mid-major" beating a historical power, it is considered one of the all time upsets.
Yea I agreed with all of that. I noted that for this "award" people were going to see it as a huge upset.

But when you rip away the historical view of the 4 programs, when you get away from the incorrect feeling that "mid-majors" aren't supposed to win games against OU football and Kansas basketball, reality should set in.

Again I understand how both games "feel" like an upset to people, big bad OU loses to little ole Boise and big bad Kansas loses to little ole Northern Iowa. These upsets "felt good" to a lot of people and that's why they got a lot of votes.

But the reality is Boise over OU wasn't even an upset at all, and Northern Iowa over Kansas was a mild upset. This is a reality based on the how good the teams were that specific year/time of year, not a historic view or overall program comparison.

I think you are somewhat agreeing with what I'm saying, but feel I don't understand why it won the award. Hopefully this clears it up.

And the award is Best Upset, not Biggest Upset.
Yea I think this further proves what I am saying. A lot of people who meet a high percentage of OU football fans and a high percentage of KU basketball fans will often times come away unimpressed. Furthermore, OU football and KU basketball have had so much success, that jealousy and resentment will come through, so when they lose to a team that is "perceived" to be far lesser and far inferior, it illicits an emotional response. Thus you have the winners of the award, but neither was really a big upset.

I think we were both saying the same thing from different angles. I don't believe that either game was a real upset, but I understand why they are perceived as such and thus why they won the award.

Y.E. Yang beating Tiger at the PGA is probably the best pure upset in the field. It was the first time anyone caught Tiger from behind in the final round of a major. Yang was #110 and Tiger was #1. There were as many, if not more, historical implications as the N. Iowa game.

That is just absurd. Obviously it is second behind the Texas game.

Yes, OU-Texas this year in Norman is one of my favorite OU games of all time for multiple reasons.
Being able to berate Damion James, J'covan Brown and Rick Barnes in person only added to the awesome win.

Most sensible comment in the entire thread.
Northern Iowa was a top 20 team most of the year.
Y.E. Yang was a no name and still is a no name.
That would be compared to like when ORU won at KU.

Agreed.

I'd like to think you're right. Beating Texas on Wayman Tisdale Day was a thousand times more satisfying to me than Northern Iowa beating Kansas...However, I'm about 99% sure it did not generate anywhere the excitement, new threads or total posts on this message board as that Kansas loss. It was an OSU football fan's mentality; no doubt. The difference is, they act that way in football every year. Hopefully, this was a once-in-a-quarter-century type of thing for OU hoops fans.

With beating a basketball rival bigger than KU and the magnitude of the game in general (honoring Wayman), I don't think there's any way you can make a case to deny the fact that OU beating Texas was the biggest (and most enjoyable) victory of the year.

And I know some OU fans may have been living vicariously through Northern Iowa, but I think that's ridiculous. We're not OSU football fans; OU basketball has too good of a tradition to succumb to that level. We're not supposed to enjoy watching our rivals lose over the enjoyment of the accomplishments that OU has garnered, regardless of how minimal those accomplishments were. I like watching our rivals lose, but I appreciate OU's wins much more.

This thread and many, many like it over the last few years begs to differ.

Someone actually said OU's most enjoyable victory this year was Northern Iowa over KU. Wow. :facepalm

It wasn't much of an upset when one considers the killer B's Bucknell and Bradley.

Maybe the kittyhawks should stop playing in OKC. They just keep getting plain embarrassed. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!:woot
