EDMOND — Early in the second half Tuesday night, during No. 10 Deer Creek’s 69-60 upset of No. 6 Edmond Santa Fe, Antlers sophomore Sydney Manning did something a little out of character.

She celebrated making a shot while being fouled, complete with shouting and a fist pump.

“I usually don’t show much emotion, but you can get fired up in this kind of game,” Manning said.

Manning scored 24 points — 13 in the second half — to help the young, improving Deer Creek team take control early and fight off a furious charge in the fourth quarter.

“I thought she played a great game,” said Deer Creek coach Totsy Manning, Sydney’s mom. “I was super pleased with how she knocked down shots early and got our team going. She was very poised during the game. She just does some great things, and our team feeds off of that.”

Deer Creek (16-6) led by as much as 21, including a 44-23 advantage midway through the third. Edmond Santa Fe (18-3) closed to within five with 4:25 remaining on a 3-pointer by Summer Jones.

But the Antlers regained their composure to make 13 free throws the rest of the way. They made 18 of 20 in the quarter and just one field goal. Deer Creek made 33 of 40 free throws overall.

“Pretty much every game we’ve played this season has been close,” Sydney Manning said. “I’m still young, but I think our young kids are definitely getting a feel for the varsity game and the level of competition ... Santa Fe is up there and (this) is a really good win for us.”

Santa Fe junior point guard Jo’Nah Johnson scored 17 points.
