Doolittle tonight

Not if he plays like he did tonight. I saw him as more of a project in the first game and exhibition.

Looked awesome today

Long season

Earlier in the game he was satisfied with passing, but once he made a lay up he steadily became more comfortable shooting the ball instead.

Doolittle had a very solid game. Good defense, rebounded the ball well, and he was efficient offensively. He used to drive me crazy trying to shoot 3 pointers but I don't think he's attempted any in the first 2 games, choosing to be more efficient on the offensive end.

At one point he did have a guy pinned on the low block and I wish he'd have used a jump hook from about 5-6 feet away but he instead chose to pass out of it. Other than that, it's hard to complain about how he played. His defense certainly helped turn the game around in the 2nd half.

another basket and he goes for 10-10. Hard to complain.

Ill take that every night.

The thing I noticed is that Lon has figured out that Brady and Doo play really well together and they have great chemistry. You can tell that they grew up playing together.

Doolittle was a plus/minus of +29 last night. More telling, is the plus/minus while he was off the floor. Many people get irritated that Doolittle doesn't hunt offense like some other Sooners, but he is a guy that is always trying to make the "correct" basketball play. It is why he rarely forces action. As a team defender--he is the absolute best we have.

Good stuff, Postman. Who is keeping your +/- stats? Or are your figures coming from the staff?

I keep my own as well, but this number came from the coaching staff.

The stat sheet linked by SoonerTraveler does not show plus/minus, although the player efficiency stat is a great analytic tool as well.

Doolittle does the most with the least amount of attention--as his usage stat indicates as well.

1. Fantastic. Please don't hesitate to share your tabulations. +/- is a great tool.

2. Doolittle doing the dirty work. Reminds me of Ryan Spangler on the Final Four team. You can never have too many guys like that. Give me five Ryan Spanglers and we'll take Guadalcanal in a week.

Great stuff on Doolittle, glad he's doing so well. Is he OK though? He seems to look really pissed off alot. Is that just his personality?

No doubt...Spangler was so very important for that team. The frustrating thing about Doolittle is he is capable of much more. However, in his defense, he isn't a guy that is comfortable/understands settling for a suspect shot. OU has a very misleading usage rate chart. They actually pass far less than the average upper-echelon teams. The last three years (and to an extent even three before that) they have been one of the worst teams in the league about touching multiple sides of the court. Lon believes in volume. Doolittle's worth can get swallowed a little in that environment.

Doolittle is not a type A personality. He is very "mission oriented." As a result, he isn't real emotional. Quite often that expression-less face looks pissed.

Thanks for the plus/minus lesson, Postman! I’m fascinated by the analytical side of the game. Maybe in time I’ll understand it better.

I didn’t need to see a plus/minus chart to know that Doolittle had one heck of a game last night. He impacts the game in so many ways, it’s easy to overlook how valuable he is to our success if you don’t watch him closely. His defense is vastly improved.

If you follow Ryan Aber on Twitter, he’ll occasionally post the season +/- numbers for OU

Says he has to figure them manually

Sports-reference does a box +/- but only displays the total. If a person to check back after every game & subtract the total from the previous game you could see how each person did in a particular game. I don't think about it that often but Doolittle is +21 after 2 games.

Interestingly, Bieniemy leads the team but that's probably just a small sample based on the fact that he played through that entire run the team went on last night. It's too soon to say it's predictive.

Great analytic site Ghost. I love that stuff. I’m assuming you were looking at the dbpm and the bpm? If so, don’t forget those are averaged per 100 possessions per average league player. Therefore, early on, those numbers are actually real time a little better. I also love the defensive rating per 100 possessions. Bieniemy and Doolittle are killing in that stat as well.

I forgot about that being per 100 possessions. Thanks for the reminder. That's a good way to compare players who play different minutes.

I really didn't look at the stats beyond bpm but it is a really great source for that sort of stuff. I just wish it did a better job of capturing those numbers game-by-game rather than in the aggregate.

actually it's not surprising at all that Bieniemy or however you spell it has the highest number. He's way active and makes things happen. Seems like every time he comes in he's immediately responsible for an assist or a steal or a score.
