Doolittle

I stand by what I said.

If you read the info at that link, there are a lot of other "penalties" available that in my mind would be more appropriate for plagiarizing a single paragraph. Again, that is JMO, which I've formed given the info that I know.

Totally your right to believe--some people also believe the world to be flat. Why the young man was expelled was due to what was stated. He plagiarized, was turned in, and subsequently punished. I also have reason to believe that the student actually had a high grade at the time of plagiarism as well--making his decision even a bit poorer. He will be better as a result.

no. you miss the point. once there was a rumor that he was being suspended I said "we should wait to see what the coach says".

then once it was a fact I said "we will get past it. maybe it will give others a chance to get more PT etc..."

then once it was rumored to be plagiarism I said "well that seems like something he can get past."

damage control is not the same as tacit approval. but at some point you have to make efforts to stop the hull from splitting any further.

do you see the difference?

austin - think about your case note for law review.

WT - you dont have any right to hurt people. get over yourself.
put you are agreeing that it is plagairism by saying we will get over it when someone said it was plagairism...so by your speaking on the subject, and your acceptance of the rumor, you are doing the same things others are doing.

WT isn't hurting anyone

Not sure where the info about just 1 paragraph came from but it's simply not true.

When you blatantly take someone's work word for word and claim it as your own throughout a major paper which counts towards 50% of the entire class grade then you are not only going to get caught but you are going to suffer a significant penalty.

This is not a matter of not citing the right source or source at all, it is a matter of taking a previously written paper and claiming it as your own.

Glad Doolittle has the opportunity to learn from this and return in Spring. I believe he may have to wait until January unless he is able to enroll in Winter course (which do exist)

He will be back December 9th. Also, on the plagiarism--you don't know. Fact.

Good catch Boulder--I didn't read the schedule correctly. He will be back for the Wichita State game on the 16th.

If he's not allowed to practice with the team then how quickly do you think he'll be ready to participate in a game?

That is the great unknown at this point. My understanding is he is already working a basketball regimen designed to keep him from getting too far behind.

How fast does Coach Kruger try to get him involved????.....I don't think anyone knows, but I know he anticipates him playing sooner than later. Kruger is a fair man--you produce...they will find you a place. However, that also goes for the players filling the void in his absence. I believe how soon he plays will be decided upon the production of the others in his absence.

exactly. thats the big question.

no bounce. reading comprehension is your friend. damage control means dealing with the damage that has already taken place. like a ratchet.

Now that is a much more believable reason to get suspended.

Well, it's certainly hard to argue with his very impressive record as someone with a wealth of inside info (coughcough).

Here's a link to an article about how fo9tball players at Florida St have been given special treatment and not held to the same academic standards as other undergrads. There has been some plagiarism involved.

There's not a shred of doubt in my mind that FSU is not the only athletic program guilty of this sort of thing but I'm glad that OU took a strong stand here.

This isn't directed at anyone...... I'm tired of hearing about Doolittle's plagiarism. I want to look forward instead of backwards, so I'm more interested in hearing about his workouts for staying in shape and keeping his basketball skills sharp. Is he going to school? I assume he is back in Edmond.

He graduated from Edmond Memorial and went to Central JH before that. My grandson is playing for the Central 7th grade football team and will play basketball, too. He said he saw Doolittle 2-3 times over the past couple of months while they had their summer workout sessions..... which I think were all at Memorial.

I'm not exactly sure how it is policed. It very well may vary from department to department. But De'Angelo Alexander bought a paper way back when and he got kicked out of school. It's been a while, but I seem to remember him being a repeat offender. A heck of a lot easier to keep stories like that under wraps back then.

Me, personally, I doubt we ever see Doolittle again. Absolutely no info to back that up, it just seems that once kids are out from under the thumb it's really hard to reel them back in.

I might agree if he were out for a year or indefinitely but he can be back with the team in just four months. From all reports, he's from a great family with terrific parents. I think he bounces back from this.

Sheesh, I apologize. The article I linked when I bumped this thread was about the abuse of academics at major universities (Florida St, to be specific) and I commented that I was glad that OU seemed to be holding itself to a higher standard. I thought it relevant and interesting. Maybe I should have created a separate thread for it.

I hope everything came out OK for you with the hurricane and the flood. I know there was a ton of high water north of Houston.

No I purposely said I wasn't directing my post at anyone, and it was just posted after yours. No harm intended. I agree plagiarism is a problem everywhere and some schools/professors take it more seriously.

I was tired of hearing the debate over 1 paragraph, an entire paper, or failure to cite an excerpt. I was just wanting to set that behind us and see if anyone knows how Doolittle is doing now..... both physically and emotionally. It had to be a real downer for him to go public..... for both him and his family and close friends. I just hope he's in a "good place".

As for us and Hurricane Harvey, we're in really good shape. Our house is pretty high so we were never in any danger of flooding. We had steady rain for 4 straight days but never had much rain. Our subdivision (Woodforest) had flooding in a new section and almost got marooned. The bridge to the south was 28 feet under water at one point, but has been clear for a couple of days now. The only other exit that fed to a 7-lane highway was down to one lane at one point but is open now. I45 into Houston was impassable in Spring so there was no way into Houston. It's all clear now. Honestly, the areas west and south of us were hit much harder than we were. The levy's have broken and that have an uncontrolled release that have flooded 1000's of homes out I-10 close to Katy .... several days after Harvey passed.

Thanks for asking

That's probably furthest from the truth. Great kid, great home life, he'll be back ASAP
