Ebi Ere

I'm sure all OU fans wish Ebi nothing but the best. I recall his playing days. When he was playing well, OU was basically unstoppable. I'll never forget his play in the non-conference games his senior year, most notably at UConn. For whatever reason, he went into a funk the latter part of that year. However, with a hobbling Hollis Price, he stepped up big in the Sweet 16 (I was at the 2003 games in Albany) against Butler. After the game, Kelvin said to him: "Welcome back to Oklahoma basketball".

Now, he's in an influencial position...perhaps OU can benefit from that down the line.

For a while, I really thought Ebi was going to be a really special player, and then, boom, he lost his shot during the year. Weird. I didn't follow him after he left OU and am glad he got to play pro ball and it is great to see him doing well now. Really really good player.

I remember EE committed and then went JUCO but came back to OU. a lot to like about that.

that 02 team could beat you in a lot of ways. one of my cherished memories of my late father (who had tix in LE4 since maybe 1979?)......was he and I went to the OU beat down of eventual champion Maryland. I maintain that was the game Ace came into his own, bodying up on Lonny Baxter. (16 pts, 11 rbs).

Me and Dad went to the Library after, had a few beers, burger and watched the highlights on ESPN. Good times.

Ere had 19 that night.

For you younsters, Ebi was a triple plus athlete along the lines of a Jordan or Bryant (not saying he was that good) type wing. Off topic, but we had another plus plus athlete I thought was going to be a superstar that played at OU before Ebi. His name was Angelo Hamilton. How, I don't know, but he chose us over Duke (if I remember correctly). He turned out to be a good player but never approached the production we all thought he would. BTW, he played for Tubbs.

For my money, Ebi, Angelo and Fears may be the best perimeter athletes to have played at OU. Probably forgetting some players though.

Randomly, I delivered a package to his house when I worked for a FedEx contractor a few years back. He was nice. Still remember where I was when I found out they lost to Indiana in the Final Four in 02. Had a little league baseball game that night. Definitely one of my favorite OU teams.

I always loved Ere's game. I remember watching him and Ryan Humphrey play in this summer league in south Tulsa. Those were some great games...remember watching Ere go off for 30+ in one of those games, hitting several DEEP shots. Ere was a baller.

The Tubbs years had some amazing athletes who were just OK basketball players. Shawn Clark at the time we signed him, had one of the highest vertical jumps in the nation. Another very average player, but high flyer was Don Gandy. Calvin Pierce was very athletic for a power forward. Those are just 3 I remember because of their reputation as high flying dunkers....

Ere looked so silky smooth but just did not shoot it consistently enough to get a shot in the NBA. Had good size and athleticism but never got there shooting wise.

Kelvin Sampson was really frustrated with Ebi at times because he thought he was the most talented player he played like the "lights weren't there" from how Kelvin would describe it. Those early 2000s teams were probably still the best OU teams since the 80s.

I don't know who Gandy was, but you nailed it with Clark and Pierce - BOTH who came to OU the same year Wayman did. I believe Clark had the second highest vertical in college hoops...forgot why he didn't make it to the finish line at OU.

Yeah, who is gandy? Couldn’t have played at ou. I have followed the team since before bliss.

Said I would forget some guys, clark and pierce. Clark could fly. Thinking about it it would probably be between clark and angelo for highest flyer. Any other suggestions? Again i am probably forgetting someone

I believe Gandy was a Juco guy. He wore goggles and I remember my Dad saying how odd looking he was, lol.... He never did anything significant, but everyone raved about his dunks and alley-oops during practice. I'm not even sure he completed a full season. If he did, it was probably his only season. Pretty sure he wore #42. I promise I'm not crazy... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I remember the name Don Gandy but not much else.

he's on the 83, 84 rosters.

P.S. any of you who don't know about Sooner stats.com.....learn up. Such a great resource Sooner fans are lucky to have.
Thank you!! Looking at Soonerstats, he played in 13 games in 83, and 15 in 84. Like I said, he didn't contribute much, but he did have a couple of high flying dunks that I remember.

I hear you!! I'm sure us old Sooners have forgotten a few over the years. Not even sure why I remembered Gandy. I was a youngster and I remember my Dad being excited about him after listening to Tubbs talk about him on KTOK radio station one Friday evening. Tubbs talked about how good of an athlete he was.
