This ESPN article says the Big 12 will review the final minute in regulation of a game that included several controversial calls that were made by the officiating crew of Tom O'Neill, Mark Whitehead and Bert Smith. I doubt if anything will come of it, but it's good that conference officials will at least take a look at the way that game ended.

There were bad calls and no-calls both ways. But the charge in the final seconds when the officials chose to suck on their whistles instead of making the call, was particularly costly to ISU.

The final minute of regulation of Kansas' 108-96 overtime victory over Iowa State on Monday is under review by the Big 12 Conference, the conference's coordinator of officials told ESPN.com Monday night.

There is also a highlight video that includes the no-call at the end of regulation for those who might have missed it:

The thing that irritates me isn't so much the fact they didn't make a call on the charge, I personally think it should have been called, but a difference of opinion on the whole let them play mentallity at the end of the game can explain the non-call. What bothers me is the call right after that that was far less physical and very well might not have been a foul no matter how much time is left on the clock. He wouldn't make an obvious call that would be detrimental to KU but then calls a fould on a non-foul in favor of KU? Hmmmm....

I would like the officials to be required to have a short 5 minute press conference after every game. There would be a lot of games where the press would have no questions as the officials would not be an important part of the game. However, in games like this one you would like to see them have to explain the calls or no-calls. Perhaps the knowledge that they will be publically accountable would get them to be better more consistent officials.

I predict nothing will be done and the networks will go back to calling Tom O'Neill a 'highly respected' referee.

I get the not wanting to make a foul call to determine a game at the end (to an extent) but that charge was too evident and you have to have the balls to make the proper call when it's that clear regardless of the situation.

My question was on the foul that shoulda knocked Withey out of the game, why didn't Hoiberg ask them to go to the tv to review it at least ?

I think they said on the broadcast that it wasn't reviewable. I could swear I've seen officials review calls like that before to make sure they credited the right player with the foul.

LOL @ that idiot kid crying. Nice parenting. Get used to it kid. Iowa sucks at everything unless you are one of the 20 wrassling fans in the world.

The Big XII will say the truth, that the calls, while close, were accurate.

Then why call the foul at any other time in the game?

An over the back call earlier in the game gave someone the ball and that may have led to a basket. A charge block call earlier in the game was important. All fo the calls matter so why do people think they shouldn't be made at the end of the game. That is just something a fool in the media once said and people have run with it. It makes no sense to me. Call a consistent game. If it was a foul in the first minute it should be a foul in the last minute. I have zero problem with some officials allowing a more physical game but be consistent.

I think you may be remembering seeing officials review a call to make sure the right player is shooting the free throws, which is definitely a reviewable play. I don't know if checking the monitor to see who committed a foul is reviewable? That's more of a judgement call, so it may not be allowed.

I know I've seen it done before - might have only been during NBA games but after this nonsense if it isn't in fact reviewable they need to bring this to college also.

totally agree. you could put a guy in a chole hold when rolling around on the ground fighting for a loose ball and nothing would be called. but that didn't warrant a foul with that little time left and having just swallowed your whistle on charge/block with a ton of contact.

I'm glad I wasn't watching (wasn't home during this game). Even though it helped OU for ISU to lose, I still can't root for KU in this matchup. And that call would have really made me mad had I seen it.

I'm still pizzed about a call like that during my senior year at OU. I went to Upper-GI for Bedlam, and they actually beat us for the first time since a fluky win in my freshman year up there. A huge call in that game was the fifth foul on OU center Al Beal. It was a foul in the corner by guard (I think Raymond Whitley, who wore no. 22). But the idiot zebra signaled the foul was on Beal (No. 24), who was 20 feet away. Everyone on the OU bench went nuts, but they wouldn't even double-check with each other to make sure. Beal was done, and that was a killer in that particular game.

I didn't care who won, but I thought the officiating over the last 5 minutes was clearly biased towards Kansas. This being said, I dont' know the rules well enough to know whether and when the camera's can be consulted.

Officiating aside, Iowa State sunk there own boat through poor clock managment, poor shot selection and missed free throws during the last 10 minutes of the game. In my opinion anyway.

Kansas always gets the calls its horribly one sided in Lawrence, but they get the calls on the road too. It never balances out. Touch fouls go their way. Charge/block calls go their way. Late in the game, they are given every opportunity by the refs to win. This is nothing new.

It was coaches son...! Cut him some slack!

Definitely a charge, have to put a whistle on that when two bodies go to the floor. ISU player had legal position by the time Johnson left the floor, real tough blow for ISU (however, great for OU).

Also, you can't review who committed the foul, only to get the correct shooter or determine if there was excessive contact above the shoulders. I understand the frustration some people have with the "let the players decide the game" guideline, but fans need to realize there is always two sides to that coin. A lot of coaches prefer it they way it is, unless it is something egregious as last night's was.

The part in bold is what makes the no call in last night's game so controversial. I hate to see an official's call decide any game. But the charge was too obvious for the official to ignore it, regardless of the time left on the clock.

Agreed, but when you have coaches who are on the rules committee stress that ideal, there is always going to be some doubt hanging in an official's mind during a last second play.

Then why did they call the foul on the Iowa State player on the floor just a few seconds later?
