Fans?

I know this board is viewed by a lot of people and word spreads but if in fact this is his father and he is on the board telling us this, that is pretty pathetic...

If he doesnt think this goes on everywhere then he and his son are very naive...he's gonna have to develop some thick skin quick if he expects to be a good player at a D1 school, otherwise mentally he wont ever make it...

and maybe stay off the boards and stop worrying about what the fans think...

My thoughts exactly.

To decide on a school based on what people on a message board say is silly. He should have read some of the stuff on KU's message board after their collapse against UNI.

It seems reasonable to me for a recruit to expect:

1. The coach is not leaving, much less getting fired.

2. Fans are in support of the program.

3. Players aren't berated by the fans.

4. This program is going to win at a high level.

I think what fans say and do can have an impact on some recruits. If that wasn't true, schools like KU would not have Midnight Madness.

Then he won't ever find a school. That's not reasonable at all. The school you cited berates their players more than we do. The other 3 you listed are legitimate expectations, but are outside the breadth of this discussion.

No joke. Was reading some very harsh comments about Henry on phog.net after the UNI loss.

Dad, your son is still young and he's not quite mature enough to make informed decisions at this point. It's your responsibility to educate him in the next couple of years that a few gruntle fans on the message boards should not be any factors on his decision making.

Bigreddog,
if you look at the posters who are on this site, rivals and espn you would see the same negative posters repeating their post. The percentage of negative posters is no more or no less than any other collages websites. When times get tough, which all programs go thru, the very small percentage of negative posters go wild. Look at Duke the last couple of years and they have struggled on the court and a small percentage of fans began to question coach K's program and his abilities. This year guess who is back in the final four? Duke. North Carolina, fans not happy about this year, but does anyone on here believe that will last long? No. "We learn more from defeats than we do victories" Coach Capel will overcome this adversity to build a stronger program in the end. My son is a big OU fan and a top rated player in his age group nationally, he sees what’s going on with the program and hates what happened this year. But he knows coach Capel and knows that he will correct the issues. He could care less what a small number of negative individuals say about what they know NOTHING about or at best very little. It’s just their opinions, which they are entitled to, even if they sound foolish and hateful. We all experience challenges in life, but we have the power to determine how it affects our lives. We either allow it to be an excuse for not achieving our goals or as motivation to overcome and excel. A few negative people will not stop my son from doing what he believes. He loves the University of Oklahoma basketball program and hopes that when his time comes to be recruited that OU honors him with an offer.

Well if hes afraid of the criticism a kid like tmg received might come his way either hes incredibly sensitive or planning on going pro with no likelihood of getting drafted. Either way he needs to mature before going to any D1 school because everyone gets some sort of criticism. Lower division basketball might be a better choice.

Great post!

If the original poster is serious, then that recruit is being completely ridiculous. First of all, the posters on here make up a tiny percentage of OU fans. Every school has good and bad fans. Most fanbases are pretty similar. If a recruit uses message boards to pick a school, he will end up not wanting to go anywhere.

Glad to see everyone is still able to rationalize their questionable behavior by deflecting to a 16 year-old kid.

Which former/current player(s) is your son like? How did the fans respond to those player(s)? If the reaction was negative your son shouldn't be on OU's list and OU shouldn't be on his.

While I certainly have behaved questionably many times in my life, this is one area in which I'm quite comfortable with my actions. I happen to agree that a lot of criticism leveled at players is unfair, over the top, and ignorant, and am on record as finding the amount of vitriol hurled at Willie Warren this season as borderline insane.

That said, making the argument that fans shouldn't criticize players on a message board is tilting at windmills, and the idea that this board is so much worse than other schools that it would cause a recruit to go elsewhere is beyond comprehension.

Also, I'd bet a large amount of money the original post is not true.

But cereal. Odds are that the OP is fake, but the situation is not that far fetched. If the kid is an OU fan and has only been to OU boards, he may not know that hate-filled posts hurled at 17-21 year olds is normal. He may just see thread after thread ripping everyone associated to OU not named Cade Davis. Or he might see all the threads claiming Capel is gone or almost gone and not see the difference between opinion and fact.

This, of course, is the fault of the parents for not explaining the difference between the real world and the internet world. But it does bring up an interesting point. When does it become too much?

Wisconsin this past year lost a top 25 national recruit who was committed to them for comments made by fans on message boards. And I doubt if their boards were even as worse as ours has been this season.

but...but...16 year-olds should know better. And if they don't, then we don't want them anyway!

It's a good thing this young recruit wasn't old enough to read web boards during Sampson's tenure. The complaints registered here are hearts and flowers compared to the nonsense spewed back then, and there wasn't a season in those years that came close to resembling this disastrous campaign.

I think the fans on this board comported themselves reasonably well during this epic fail of a season, and if the young player in question doesn't see that, he is very wet behind the ears, talented as he may be.

There's not a fanbase in the country that supports its program without raising questions when things going badly -- not one.
