Fans?

Excellent points, Cheno!

If the OP is not sold by now that the passion on this board runs deep because fans truly care about OU basketball, I'm afraid nothing we have to say will change his mind.

IMO, fans can be passionate and still show some class. It's certainly okay to be critical of the team/players, but a small minority of our posters allow their frustrations to rob them of all reason and civility.

I couldn't agree more, scrybe. I'm glad you pointed that out.

Passionate fans are going to be critical at times and some are more politically correct than others with their language.

What I noticed this year were the fans getting on players when they thought the player wasn't giving 100 percent or wasn't a team player. Again, those are fans perspectives and may not be reality and that is where the fan has to be careful not to make it personal.

This board is pretty tame (most of the time) and that's why I spend more time here, because it's not OU's party line and it's good basketball discussion.

Sometimes though, it's like a train wreck, you don't want to look but you can't help it and then you post and get caught up. Everyone has to be careful.

I agree. But I have a feeling this has more to do with multiple threads skirting the edge of racial insensitivity (I'm not calling anyone a racist, so unbunch your panties) dissecting the syntax, spelling and grammar of tmg's facebook, because he had the audacity to leave OU before we were ready.

My son lives in Texas with his mom and he is a big OU fan. That's how he was raise, to only think sooner red. He's 6' 9" and avg 24pts a game as a soph. He has already recieved over 30 letters from Duke, NC, Tex, U-Con, etc. And yes OU. But after seeing how most of you have gone after TMG, Tiny and WW he has drop OU from one on his list to third. People, recruits do read these boards.

Catch any fish lately? My son is being recruited by about 25 schools and knows this is a message board. Educate and inform!

BigRed, I posted on this thread earlier this morning but driving to work it bugged me. I guess my comment to you and your son would be to realize OU has some GREAT fans who love and support their team. This site is living proof of that. People tend to only look at or complain about the negative. What about how this board has supported Cade Davis? What about how this board has supported Drew Fitzgerald and Stephen Pledger? Those two players even had an off the court incident but didn't get taken to task about it because they work hard, have good attitudes and seem to be team guys.
Fans will forgive very easily. Being life long OU fans as you say I'm sure you saw the love and admiration thrown at guys over the years. Hollis Price is a Basketball God in all of our eyes. David Godbold is revered despite never being a superstar. Blake Griffin, quite possibly the best player in OU's history, is really held in no higher RESPECT than his brother Taylor. Why? Because both played with the same passion and love for the game and for their university. I guess in closing I would say that we'd all really LOVE to have your son come play basketball at the University of Oklahoma and for a great man in Coach Jeff Capel. BUT, that being said, if your son comes here and acts like a booger expect him to be picked at. If your son comes here and takes the game seriously, works hard, gives max effort, makes mistakes like all of us do and is generally a good team guy he will be LOVED regardless of if he's the next Blake Griffin or David Godbold. It's really quite that simple and not much different if he picks Duke, UNC or the other schools you mentioned.

Yes Cheno, that is your best post.

Tell your son to go to class, be a team player, and not drop out of school to play ball in Europe because he's lazy.

I question the legitimacy of the OP, but I'll also add that if there is a kid who chooses not to go to OU because he fears the criticism he might receive from anonymous fanatics on a message board, then he's the kind of mentally weak player we don't need.

Agree!!

And what school don't have fans that rag on players that ditch class, ditch practice and don't know that team isn't spelled with a I ?

If you got that kinda boy, we don't wanna him. OU wants roll models and kids that go to class and play hard for the name on front of their jerseys and not the name on the back.

Well my son is being raised a Sooner fan as well. As is a number of kids I know of. I also explain to him how a few opinions don't necessary reflect the entire fan base but sometimes no matter how callous those opinions might sound there may be some truth to them. Sometimes you have to call a spade a spade. He understands that if he decides to play for a big time program he should strive to be a model citizen first then a great player second and being a great player isn't always individual awards and accomplishments. Being a great player is putting his team first which every coach and fan appreciate. If he doesn't put his team first then he can expect some ridicule especially from anonymous posters on a message board.

I really hope your son understands this but moreso understands that it is that way everywhere. Most of my relatives are from North Carolina. Some are Blue Devil's and some are Tarheel's. They ALL are very diehard supporters and expect nothing less than good kids that represent the program with class and love for their team.
