Fans?

I know this board is viewed by a lot of people and word spreads but if in fact this is his father and he is on the board telling us this, that is pretty pathetic...

If he doesnt think this goes on everywhere then he and his son are very naive...he's gonna have to develop some thick skin quick if he expects to be a good player at a D1 school, otherwise mentally he wont ever make it...

and maybe stay off the boards and stop worrying about what the fans think...

As a former Mod on another board, I believe the OP. His son is probably not aware this goes on at every board because his dad preached everything-OU. That means he probably has spent most of his time on the OU boards.

I tried to say this on another thread - OU fans really need to watch what they say. I know for a fact that Jeff Capel's mom was on the board I was monitoring as well as families of other players. This is why I cringe when I read some of the hurtful posts here. I really wish people would keep the criticism to a constructive level and not get so personal with their anger.

try to stay positive and keep comments constructive?

novel concept.

try to do it and everyone gets mad then turns on you...no matter what your reasoning.

Regardless if the initial post is serious or not this board (just comparing OU ones) is a lot more positive then the other OU boards around. The moderators do a good job of cleaning up the trash instead of letting the same negative people spew their nonsense over and over.

I hope you know there are some of us who don't go into melt down mode easily. We have a great program, but like every where else there are fickle fans. I would love to see your son in crimson and cream, but I especially want to see him play for us because he wants to be a part of our team and program not because of the quality of our message board. I think he would find that if he ever struggled here their would be as many of us defending him and supporting him as attacking him. I don't know what else to say, except select the team you feel comfortable with and the program you want to play for. Obviously I hope that is OU because I always want to be able to appreciate a kid who was raised a sooner getting a chance to excel in our program.

I just wanted to make sure the OP saw this. The Mods here really do a great job. Again, I believe the OP was legit, and this is a concern for his son who probably hasn't spent as much time on other message boards. The posters who said that negative criticism is on every message board are 100% correct. However, that doesn't mean we can't make an effort to think about what we're going to say before posting what the families and friends of an 18-21 year old OU student-athlete get to read.

Cam and TJ are still coming. And I'm "guessing" other recruits will as well.
Criticism on internet message boards????? Hmmm, who'd have thought.
Happens everywhere except NAIA schools.

I completely agree....I do my fair share of complaining but I try not to go personal...thats just silly to do...
I still feel that tmg is selfish and was not a team player..but I dont go any further than that...
I have seen a few threads bashing kansas's center and other players around the conference, I know other teams do this as well but that still does not make it ok...posters who post stuff like this must be making up for areas they are lacking

I agree but it's a gray area that everyone interprets differently.
Like you saying you try not to go personal but call TMG selfish and not a team player is personal IMO. And I agree with you. I'm not calling you out just saying it's up to interpretation. I don't think calling someone "selfish" is constructive criticism. Nothing constructive about it.
That being said, again I agree with you, and if the shoe fits and someone is selfish they are selfish and deserve to be called out.

Right, I understand what you are saying. It is up to how you interpret things....I would consider selfish as a way you are acting, so to me that would not be a personal issue because those are things that you need to be told so you can try and fix the issue..
But what I was referring to are things like calling kids names by the way they look, or making fun of kids by the way they talk.
Growing up in Oklahoma and now living in Houston it is funny because the people down here feel that I have a slight accent....So I get teased alittle bit but I think it is funny...not everyone feels the same though

I have no idea if the OP is legit? I assume he is, because I do know that recruits, players and their families read fan boards like this and are often influenced or offended by some of the things posters say.

As others have correctly pointed out, that is the nature of the beast. Fan boards are an ugly animal because users can (and do sometimes) say pretty much anything they want and no one can look into their eyes and heart to evaluate their intent. The only thing board admins and mods can do is to try to control it, without going so far as to put a muzzle on everyone. What I've said has been true of every fan board I have been on in the last ten years. None, I repeat NONE, are void of disgruntled fans who make unkind or hurtful remarks when their favorite team is having a bad season, or a bad game for that matter. If you think this board is bad, take my advice and don't venture over to some of the others. lol

bigreddog, I sincerely hope you and your son will not take what a very small minority of OU fans say as an accurate assessment of how Sooner fans feel about our basketball program. Even many of those who spout off when they're upset are extremely loyal and supportive in reality. I'd dare say that you and other members of your family have said things you regretted later at some point. If not, you will in time. Unfortunately, it's human nature to say things we don't mean when we're frustrated, and frustration defined OU's season this year.

Would you feel better if fans here were happy about one of the worst seasons in our history? Would your son want to attend a school were fans were content with a 13-18 record? I think not. If you're really Sooner fans, as you say you are, steer your son in OU's direction and help us make sure we never have to endure another disappointing season like the one just ended.

My son lives in Texas with his mom and he is a big OU fan. That's how he was raise, to only think sooner red. He's 6' 9" and avg 24pts a game as a soph. He has already recieved over 30 letters from Duke, NC, Tex, U-Con, etc. And yes OU. But after seeing how most of you have gone after TMG, Tiny and WW he has drop OU from one on his list to third. People, recruits do read these boards.

BigRed, I posted on this thread earlier this morning but driving to work it bugged me. I guess my comment to you and your son would be to realize OU has some GREAT fans who love and support their team. This site is living proof of that. People tend to only look at or complain about the negative. What about how this board has supported Cade Davis? What about how this board has supported Drew Fitzgerald and Stephen Pledger? Those two players even had an off the court incident but didn't get taken to task about it because they work hard, have good attitudes and seem to be team guys.
Fans will forgive very easily. Being life long OU fans as you say I'm sure you saw the love and admiration thrown at guys over the years. Hollis Price is a Basketball God in all of our eyes. David Godbold is revered despite never being a superstar. Blake Griffin, quite possibly the best player in OU's history, is really held in no higher RESPECT than his brother Taylor. Why? Because both played with the same passion and love for the game and for their university. I guess in closing I would say that we'd all really LOVE to have your son come play basketball at the University of Oklahoma and for a great man in Coach Jeff Capel. BUT, that being said, if your son comes here and acts like a booger expect him to be picked at. If your son comes here and takes the game seriously, works hard, gives max effort, makes mistakes like all of us do and is generally a good team guy he will be LOVED regardless of if he's the next Blake Griffin or David Godbold. It's really quite that simple and not much different if he picks Duke, UNC or the other schools you mentioned.

This.

I agree. But I have a feeling this has more to do with multiple threads skirting the edge of racial insensitivity (I'm not calling anyone a racist, so unbunch your panties) dissecting the syntax, spelling and grammar of tmg's facebook, because he had the audacity to leave OU before we were ready.

Excellent points, Cheno!

If the OP is not sold by now that the passion on this board runs deep because fans truly care about OU basketball, I'm afraid nothing we have to say will change his mind.
