Flopper to the Celtics with the 6th Pick

You guys are babies.. Don't wanna read about it? Guess what you don't have to click!! Shocking I know. And unhealthy obsession due to one thread designed to track his stats so we don't have to find them is a weird definition of obsession.. People are sooo soft these days.. Yay go win everybody! rainbows and stickers for everyone. Give me a break
I'm starved for OU bball news, so i'm always excited when a thread has a new reply. Unfortunately, this one is the one getting the most play......and it's about Marcus Friggin' Smart.

My euphoria at possible news gets its collective junk punched every time I see a new reply.

Which is I suppose better than no reply, but that topic is better served for the Beatles For Sale thread.

So you don't realize that a new reply in a threa about Marcus smart is about Marcus smart?

I just don't see why it matters. He's a rivals player that is a thug, attacked fans, and plays a frustrating brand I bball. We got to watch him a lot in the state and see the hype he got. Y is it wrong to give updates on him?

So comparing Marcus Smart as a prospect to Kevin Durant as a prospect only seems ludicrous to me?

Side note: happy birthday Eduardo!

Where do you see Gasol ending up? It's scary to think of him on the Spurs. They only have $54 million of salary committed.

Gasol has narrowed his choices to the Spurs and the Bulls. He can only get the salary he wants from the Bulls via a sign and trade, which LAL has said is unlikely. So I fully expect to see him on the Spurs, making the Champs even better.

Hearing he'll sign with the bulls now, but that could change in 10 mins.

There is nothing wrong on giving updates on him. My issue is with bias being so strong that it makes people completely unwilling or unable to have a semi-rational discussion.

With Smart in particular, a lot of people on this board act as if everyone outside of Oklahoma is crazy for thinking Smart was a legitimate lottery pick. I think it's possible for someone to have an honest, unbiased opinion that Smart is overrated, that he's not going to have much of an NBA career; however, when people are gloating over his poor shooting in summer league (as if the entire league, including Danny Ainge, had no idea that Smart doesn't yet have a good jump shot), it indicates one of two things: 1) people put far too much weight into summer league performance, or 2) there is some egregious confirmation bias.

I understand no one is going to be completely objective, but I think it's possible to have biases and still have reasonable discussions. When it's simply everyone telling everyone else what they want to hear, inflating the significance of anything that supports those beliefs, and ignoring anything to the contrary, it's just as mind-numbing as political talk radio (right and left).

Maybe no one else completely missed the point.

The point was that people are putting far too much weight into summer league performance (likely because a player from a rival school didn't shoot the lights out), and not that Smart and Durant are comparable prospects.

Smart is one of the most hated players in the history of the Big 12/Big 8 conference, by all schools. We are talking about a player who made national headlines on numerous occasions for kicking, stomping, crying, pushing fans, and especially flopping. His flopping antics are on youtube, have made Sportscenter, have been the topic of articles in national and local media outlets, etc.

All that being said, not surprising that people are tracking him here. To be honest I think people want him to bust.

The Big 12 hated Eduardo Najera too. He was called all kinds of names, and basically, people thought he was nothing more than a thug/enforcer. But OU fans loved him. Same exact thing with Smart. Yes, the kid did some ridiculous stuff, and was over-hyped at times. That said, the kid has a ton of talent and athletic ability, and outside of the flopping, really only had a few "moments" that fans should use against him. Pretty sure I've seen OU players get mad and punch a chair or something. We've had players storm out of practice saying they were quitting. And I'm not talking Calvin Newell types either. Bookout did that. Just about every NBA team, scouting service, and NBA guru had Smart as a top 7 or so pick in the draft. Will he be a bust? Maybe. There are lots of busts in every draft. But we won't know for a few seasons.

I think you are right that people want him to bust. I really don't care one way or the other because I'm not a fan of his or the Celtics.

I don't dislike Marcus Smart I dislike the incredible hype machine that for unknown reasons surrounded him. How are Sooner fans supposed to feel when we're subjected to a Marcus Smart "highlight" reel towards the end of an OU Bedlam win when Smart was a complete non-factor?

Yep, the hype was out of control from the jump with Smart, and I too think that's what most fans resent. Smart behaved like an ass at times (even apart from the flopping), but not so frequently that he would have been so widely reviled by other fans. It was the over-the-top hype.

On the other hand, I don't think reactions to Najera and Smart were remotely comparable--not even in the same ballpark.

Then you've forgotten. Other teams HATED him. Kind of how Jason Sutherland, or Gabe Muoneki(sp) get brought up around here, that same list has Eduardo on it on other teams' boards.

If Smart played for OU, OU fans would be singing a different tune. That is what's annoying about the whole thing.

I don't recall Eduardo Stomping Chairs, Storming off the bench in the middle of a game, Faking Racism Claims, and Pushing Fans. That is what I don't like about Smart. The flopping, while ridicules and hilarious at times, is a part of the game for better or worse. That doesn't bother me.

If Eduardo did do those things, show me an example and I will admit i was wrong about him.

And if Smart had come to OU and done those things I would not like him. I would view him the same as I view Tommy Mason Griffin

Perhaps some would; I wouldn't. I'd be embarrassed about the flopping and some of his other antics. I might not have noticed the hype so much, but I sure would have eventually asked myself when he was going to live up to it.

The answer to that, of course, was never. He had a solid collegiate career, but didn't come close to ever justifying the relentless hype.

...and the hype is over. Time to move on.

Hey, I didn't post till page 5 of this thread, and even then I just threw out a couple of quips.

I never give the guy a thought except when I read this thread.

That said, if guys want to rag on him, who cares? It's sports, he played for a team most of us hate, and he behaved like a bonehead at times. We endured a two-year onslaught of hype about the guy; I figure anyone inclined to mock him gets a free pass for another two years. I might not keep reading their threads, but if they want to start 'em, let them have at it.

Agreed.

I don't recall ever making any mention of Smarts summer league stats, I consider every players summer league stats to be less than meaningless, making it even funnier that you looked up Durants to "prove" the avg OU fan bias. While I agree there is some confirmation bias taking place, who cares? I would guess the avg OUhoops poster trusts their own eyes over anything someone else thinks, writes or says about Smart as a player and virtually none of them would change their mind if he set every summer league record under the sun. So I would contend that your premise of overemphasizing summer league performance is highly inaccurate.

Sorry, wasn't directed at you, just in general.
