Football question

those are some dumb hypotheticals.

and in hindsight, maybe not relying on an injured running back to make that catch is the right move

Im fine with the decision. But knowing what he know, i wish he wouldhave just run it

Saying that a college football player was going to drop a beautiful throw that hit him in the hands was a dumb hypothetical until it happened.

In hindsight, I wish we had gone for it on 4th downs instead of dropping the punt or missing the FG. I wish we had ran the ball instead of throwing a pick-6 as well.

Ultimately these were almost all the correct decision in the moment. If we are playing in a dreamworld where we get to redo the play, we would do the same thing and just execute a little differently. Steph Curry missing a 3 doesn't make shooting it a bad decision, even if he missed.

I was at the game...first time looking at this thread since the game.

I'll just add that we had wide open guys all night that mateer never even looked at. I was in the north endzone and every drive we had atleast 1 play with a wide open guy deep.

And also, the missed false start was insane and RMT was held virutally on every play
The missed false start lost us the game imo

Injury did nothing unless he would have been a foot or 2 further.. impossible to blame that

he threw for over 300 yards ... qb's on every team miss guys in every game on the season ..

do you think he should throw for 450 a game .. ?

The only QB all year to throw for 300 yards against Alabama.

It's amusing hearing people saying that Mateer, Arbuckle, and our WRs all suck. But at the same time also saying WRs were open all game. If Mateer truly sucked against Alabama, then either Arbuckle or our WRs are other worldly. Somebody had to have done something right.

You’re not wrong but for whatever reason, that is how that play is officiated at both the pro and college level. The offense always gets a little grace period once the play clock hits zero. On the play you are mentioning, it was maybe a bit more of a grace period than usual, but not totally beyond what I’ve seen in other games. I think they need to revisit that rule and apply it more strictly, but I doubt they will.

I am listening to the Oklahoma Breakdown and it’s so discouraging hearing another postgame where they discuss how many times Mateer either didn’t see open guys or simply refused to give his best playmakers a chance in one-on-one situations. That, and more talk about how bad the pad level and technique is from our linemen. I mentioned last week in that I heard a national analyst comment recently about how sloppy our linemen are. And that’s been the case for years, and it is true for both the young guys and the vets. I don’t care if Bill was a good coach years ago. That doesn’t buy him several years of bad coaching.
The "grace period" is a fake and new "rule" that allows officials the ability to have complete subjectivity and now they can directly choose to influence games or not. For the majority of football's life, that was NOT the case. It was VERY VERY consistent in the past that if you saw a 0 = flag.

You're discounting the fact that we have, and make no attempt to have, a run game.. so your pass yards are of course going to be higher

I don’t disagree but it’s been at least five years now. They have talked about it a lot on game broadcasts. Again, I’m not saying I like it, but I’m just saying it wasn’t completely out of like with how the game is currently officiated.

You’re talking about one game. He missed open men all season and rarely put up 300 yards.

And I never remember an entire season of pods where there was talk about Baker or Kyler or even freshman Caleb not seeing wide open receivers who were the primary read. And I doubt you’d see that watching Indiana or Vandy or Ohio State or
Oregon this season.

Yeah, its just my hot button issue bc they act like it was always that way and retcon the whole situation so that refs can fix games in the future and no one will bat an eye

The runs vs passes were pretty even most of the season. Got a little lopsided later in the game while playing from behind and decided 2-3 YPC wasn't going to cut it.

My understanding has been that for at least 20 years, the teaching is that if the ref sees zero, they look to the ball, and if it has been snapped in the time it took to look back, it's fine.

This happened all the way back in the Allen Patrick Oregon game and that was the discussion then. I believe we scored a touchdown on a play where the playclock hit 0 right before snapping.

I think flags for anything that doesn't create an unfair advantage ar pretty lame, so I don't mind it. Nobody enjoys unnecessary play stoppages.
