Football question

Man this is a wild take. We have pretty high retention in large part because of the culture.
It is the one thing brent does exceptionally well.

Do you think the soul mission and culture comes at an expense of results on the field? If so, how?
To be fair, it is possible that the retention isn't a good thing and that we are giving raises to guys who don't deserve them tho too.. we def do a terrible job of retaining coaches that shouldn't be retained.

Its dog eat dog and our OL and skill positions don't eat anything

I'm talking about the stars that undoubtedly had big offers from other programs. You don't retain these guys unless they really like the culture.

Stutsman, bowman, RMT, stone,etc

Yeah, my point on "culture" is that it is just a buzzword. I heard a coach recently say something to the effect of "what you put on the field/court -- that's your culture." The rest of the stuff is pretty meaningless to me. And I agree with you -- there are some players and coaches who shouldn't be retained.

Hard to fault them on taking Ott. I know that's a very different opinion most have due to his horrid play. He was well renown across the industry for a reason. They spent some cash on him but compared to the market it wasn't that terrible. Plus how many offensive skill difference makers are available in the spring portal?

In terms of retention... Keeping some of those depth pieces looks bad. None of the big time players they shelled out for (Stone, Jackson, RMT, RSJ, Burks, Halton, and Dom Williams) have played below their value.

But why did they decide to keep (and maybe even overpay) for Jayden Gibson, Barnes, Sexton, and Tatum. That is the side that doesn't look good. Should've cut these guys loose and back filled with cheaper options.

Speaking of Brent -- he just made a comment in his presser about how this isn't the Big 12 where OU will blow teams out every week except one game. The Kansas State beat writer (rightfully) roasted him by pointing out that Brent went 10-8 in the Big 12 and lost to seven teams not named Texas.

Again, read my comments during games. I say almost all of this stuff in real time. I’ve been talking about Brent’s horrible game management for four years. Gabe rarely if ever discusses that. I’ve complained about the lack of talent offensively for years, whereas Gabe spends eight months each year talking about how many playmakers we have. I’ve said for four years how stupid I think his soul mission and off field culture crap is, and Gabe loves that garbage. The fact that he comes on the pod a handful of times each year after a game and makes the same observations that anyone with eyes can see regarding scheme and game planning in no way means I am copying him. I know your mind may be too simple to process this, but it’s possible for two people to independently come to the same conclusion on topics without one “copying” the other.

Complaining about the SOUL mission might be the biggest waste of time, so congrats on have one unique observation. It reminds me of when at least once a week for an entire season you either complained that Moser's shirt was too tight or that he was too friendly with a frat house.

But yeah sure, you probably came to the same negative conclusions as Gabe (without any of the positive), used the same wording, and it just happened to coincide with right after the pod released. You've really convinced us.

I mean do we know what they are paid? Kind of hard to say we should have let them go if we don't even know what they are paid and if they asked for more

yikes

The SOUL mission and defense are the two objectively good things during BV’s tenure.

And coaches who don’t come up with a cheesy slogan and plaster it all over social media don’t prepare people for life?
Name and slogan or no name and slogan it’s still objectively good to have a program in place to make young men better. The game of football itself doesn't really prepare you for life but it’s everything around it.
