Football question

I’m just going into game super skeptical- PTSD and just wierd wierd comments about players playing. All the questions will be answered Saturday- run game has to get something going- dunno if Mateer will be able to win this game by himself

yeah....mateer is good enough to beat michigan with a big game through the air.
but it sure would be nice to keep their defense honest and make them respect our run game.
would be nice to see our defense have a big game as well.

It's much more likely it's a coaching or training decision to keep them out, then the players.

Like I said, a couple of of those guys are fighting for a starting spot. Guys like that don't sit out games they are healthy enough to play. Simmons is a Senior. 1/12th of his season is gone. You really think he chose that? That ALL of them chose that? After the training staff held Fasusi out of practice for a week or more for heat exhaustion?

Complain that OU's training staff is too conservative. I'd likely believe that. But I don't believe that we had multiple players in fights for starting spots elect to sit out. In no world does that make sense.
I have no idea and neither do you. That's my point. We don't have inside info.
Gabe does and I don't think he would have made the comments he did unless he knew some of them could have played but chose not to

All I know is that in 5 years of listening to their pod, I’ve never heard Gabe directly call out players, by name, for not playing through something. And he was very clear in saying it was the players; he didn’t mention the medical staff or coaches.

You may be right that the staff wants to play it safe, too, especially after last year. But one of the reporters said Simmons cleared concussion protocol 10 days or more before the game. If so, then I have little doubt that if the player had been adamant that he wanted to play, he likely would have been able to talk his way into the lineup.

But getting back to Ott … it’s clear that he was healthy Saturday. You don’t put a guy back to return kicks, and give him a carry in the fourth quarter, if he isn’t healthy. Given that, I think it’s ridiculous to not allow him a meaningful opportunity to get his feet wet. He missed a fair amount of time last season, so why have Michigan be his first legit action as a running back in 10 months or however long? Give him 8-10 carries, then get him out of the game and play Blaylock and X. And put Barnes in as a “reward” late in the fourth quarter to ensure that our punt team will get work after a 3-and-out.
We had several wrs last year that per certain sources ou trainers cleared and they choose not to play. I understand players not feeling comfortable with injury and feeling they are not ready. Mental part of injuries can be tougher the physical. But obviously need all hands on deck for OU to have a good season.

Throughout pros and esp college, you're seeing, and going to see even more, players being soft and looking out for only themselves at all costs. Last year's team was big on that. Lot of toxic losers and quitters last year.

Warms my heart to see nic anderson on the bench at lsu too. And esp matthew sluka on the bench at James Madison (my wife is an unlv grad)

I think we’ll have a serviceable run game Saturday. We’re not gonna run wild but we don’t have to, just be effective when we do run. Ott and Robinson should get the lions share of the load. We have an excellent defense that will make life very hard for a freshman QB on the road. Michigan is gonna have a hard time running the ball too.

We just have to play great defense and be efficient on offense, win the turnover game and don’t do dumb things to beat ourselves. All things we are more than capable of doing. I think we’re going to win this game.

If it all goes south and we lose, I’d have to seriously wonder if BV is the guy to lead the program. We finally have the talent and depth to compete and win in the SEC. If we can’t beat this michigan team at home with their true freshman QB, that’s a huge red flag for this coaching staff and probably a warning for the rest of the season.

Sexton started. Halton played a lot. Did they not also miss a fair amount of time in camp?

After hearing Brent today, I am more skeptical than ever that Ott will be the true lead back Saturday. His comments are eerily similar to last year’s comments about the receivers.
the top 5 OT's all missed time in camp and Halton is a senior captain proven player at OU .. not a new guy .. and he only missed a little bit of time ..

NIL is great for the students, and was needed. But also takes some of the I have to prove myself for the next level. If a player gets total of 2 million in college, dropping draft spots does not make a ton of difference. Specially if they feel they are injured. Long term health is key to nfl money.

Who cares if he is a new guy? Again, none of that should matter. Put your best players on the field. I don't think anyone would argue that Ott isn't a better player than Halton, again, assuming he is healthy and that the coaches aren't lying through their teeth again. The OU staff clearly considers Ott one of the best players in the country, as evidenced by how much they spent to bring him to Norman.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, and I respect your opinion. We will just have to agree to disagree on this topic. My bottom line is that once the Little League World Series ended, I thought we were past the part of the sports calendar where playing time decisions were based on anything other than who the best players were, with exceptions for injuries and disciplinary reasons.

and i was not really defending the coaches decisions .. just giving the context of them ..

I agree that the best players need to play period ..

but i can see the point of rewarding hard work ... especially in a game you have no chance to lose ..

I will 0% surprised if Barnes for inexplicable reasons leads in carries or at a min has 1/3 of them. Crazy

He won’t. You guys need to relax. I’ve analyzed the data and we are going to win. So, just have a beer, get laid, and enjoy the week and be ready to enjoy a great OU victory on Saturday.

For those interested in this kind of stuff, I would recommend listening to the game preview with the guest on Teddy and Gabe's show. He is a former Michigan player who now does a lot of TV work and I thought he was really good and insightful. And his comments about our run game had me nodding vigorously on my drive to work.

3x pro bowl 9 year NFL OT Taylor Lewan

i think he played with Gabe at some point and they are friends ..

I was actually referring to the regular pod, not the In the Weeds episode. The guest on the pod is Jack Butt, a former TE. I bet the In the Weeds is good, too.
ahh cool ... i had not listened to either yet .. just remembered them mentioning Lewan at the end of the last weeds pod

i watched yesterday's episode with butt.....
my takeaway is that mich is the best team in college football this season and we have no chance of winning.
