Football question

Our head coach just chose to kick a FG that extends it from a one-possession game to (checks notes) still a one-possession game. Brutal decision. But it also speaks volumes about our running game.
I disagree. Brutal would have been to try and go for it and fail.

Freeze coached this drive aggressively. Went for it on multiple fourth downs and took the lead. Venablows coached scared and within one possession, we are behind. It’s that type of game management that Brent has sucked at for four years. Absolutely awful decision maker.

Anyone want to call #4 a great CB? Anytime OU blitzes Arnold is throwing a jump ball to Coleman and Auburn wins.

It’s an atrocious call. It didn’t make it a two possession game. It showed a total lack of confidence in his offense. And it immediately bit us in the ass. There is no analytic model that would support that decision.
Of course he didn’t have confidence in the offense lol. He made the right call and OU won because of it!!

Great finish! Love the defense. But this win doesn’t matter if the run game can’t get going.

No question we have at least 3 losses on our schedule if we continue to average less than 2 yards per rush. I can't put much of the blame on Blaylock because the o-line was getting blown up on almost every run. It was brutal to watch. Offensively, we're pretty one-dimensional with almost all of our success coming on short passes. Good d-coordinators will figure out how to stop that. Mateer had a beautiful long pass that set up the winning TD, but he needs to be much more accurate on those deep balls.

There were so many penalties committed by both teams as well as non-calls that could have gone against both teams. As such, I'm not sure how much the refs played a part in this. That said, if I was an Auburn fan, I would have lost it on that 1st Q fumble return for a TD that got overturned. If I'm being objective, I believe the call on the field should have stood. I just don't think there was definitive evidence one way or the other, but I would love for someone to set me straight :-).

All in all, great job by the defense when it counted! And thankfully, J Arnold still makes slow decisions...just glad it benefitted us this time.

Confidence in the def…!

Great win. Onto rest!
I mean … if you have that much confidence in the D, you go for it and trust that the defense won’t give up a 90-yard drive if you get stopped on fourth down. And if you convert, a touchdown puts you up two scores and makes it incredibly difficult on Auburn to come back.

They won because of it? How?
Because we all know the offense wouldn’t have converted it. Then OU is only up by the 3 and it’s a different ballgame. It was the right call for the right situation. Points were hard to come by. Get em where you can!

If BV doesn’t get the points and goes for it on first and fails, then people are bitching and moaning. “You know the offense is struggling, why wouldn’t you just get the points?”

I don’t know what “folks” would say. I know that my opinion wouldn’t have changed. You go for it there. We’ve actually been quite successful when we only need a yard or two, mainly using Mateer. But again, getting a six point lead didn’t end up helping us because they drove right down the field, converted a pair of fourth downs, and took the lead.

But the bigger concern is that our running game is so bad that the coach didn’t trust them to convert. I’m sure we will get the usual excuses about the line being “banged up,” but this is really a terrible run game. One YPC today from our backs, even with the guy who people think is our best guy getting almost all the touches. That isn’t going to win on the road, or against better teams. It may not have won today had we not gotten away with the first touchdown that likely shouldn’t have counted. I just don’t get it.

Everyone still feel like I overreacted about the running game? Either the line can’t run block, the backs aren’t good, or both. But whatever the cause, we have zero ability to run the ball.

You called it! Just need to play Blaylock more!!

In his defense, not really fair to put a true freshman 1 on 1 against him so consistently with no help. BV was betting on Arnold not being able to beat us, and thankfully he was right, as he often is.

We brought the house consistently, and honestly Auburn picked up the blitz well all things considered. Arnold just could not get rid of the ball. We had 10 sacks, and would be up to at least 12 if we had declined the holding and not horse collared. Of those 12, maybe 3 or 4 were not his fault. His WRs were dramatically superior to our DBs athletically, and he just needed to get the ball in the air and let them make the play.

If Baker were their QB against this scheme, Auburn would have put up 40-50 easily. Thankfully I've yet to see an elite QB this year, and we wouldn't play defense like that if the QB could beat us.

Blaylock is the best RB by far. OL was getting their butts kicked and he was the only guy making something out of nothing. If he gets decent blocking, this is a different game. We still have OL guys banged up so the bye and next 3 weeks are good for us. That said, this run game isn’t very good and QB run game will probably be the best part of the run game all year.

This defense is elite. We should’ve had 2 INT with Bowen returning one for a TD but we dropped both of them. That would’ve tilted the game to impossible for Auburn but we blew it.

Mateer is a gamer and a good football player. Hes not an elite QB but he’s an elite leader more like a Tebow than a mayfield. We can’t keep turning the ball over and expect to win.

Wichita expects us to be perfect but we are not a perfect team. We are still a work in progress with a less than ideal run game. Losing turnover game and poor run game will get us beat at some point. We will not go undefeated. If we want to make the playoffs, which is possible, we have to improve the turnovers and the run game. It would be nice to see the OL fully healthy for several games but that seems impossible.

This is still a very good team and the SEC is wide open. When every conference team we play is ranked, this is what happens. Every game will be a 4 quarter battle. It’s a very thin margin between Winning and losing. Winning is always better. There are no style points.

Who are you comparing him to? All other RBs combined for 1 carry. And he was making nothing from nothing.

It made it where Auburn needed a TD and the extra point to take the lead.

At that point, the OU defense had given up two TD's. Not in the game, BUT ALL SEASON. That was 100% the right call. It also means that if Auburn gets that TD (which they did), all OU needs is a FG to get the lead back.

Had it been 4th and 1, MAYBE you go for it. But 4th and 2? With our running game? EASY decision.

I don’t expect us or any team to be perfect. But is it ok to expect more than 1 YPC? I mean, that is truly bottom of the barrel stuff. Missouri rushed for about a million yards tonight against a conference opponent. I’m not complaining about a minor flaw here. Take away a few good runs from Blaylock, and this has been four absolutely miserable performances in the run game. It’s just extremely frustrating after listening to so much talk about how much better the line was and how much better our running game would be this year.

It’s asking a lot of the defense to expect them to keep bailing the offense out. I haven’t complained about the lack of turnovers because they can be a somewhat fluky thing, but if our offense is going to keep struggling, we have to start getting some turnovers and easy scores.
