Football question

OU leads Kent State at halftime 23-0. The most important thing right now is the health of WR Keontez Lewis. I wish those brick walls were padded for gameday. The young man needs our prayers.

As for the game, we have a Jaydn Ott sighting and he looks good! He has some nice moves! J Gibson made a spectacular catch as well! We definitely are in need of offensive playmakers.

It looks like OU spent a lot of time practicing run-blocking this week. Unfortunately, it also looks like we took the week off practicing pass-blocking :-(.

If you're watching the game, you may also notice we did a terrible job in the first half covering their receivers. They are wide open on almost every pass attempt. If they had a QB who could get them the ball, this might be a competitive game.

Agree with all of this. That was a very uneven half of football. Hawkins started off very shaky but made some better throws as the half progressed. Pass pro was not good at all, and all five starters actually started. Ott looks shifty and quick. And our secondary might be a real concern. You’re absolutely right that they had a lot of guys open.

Anyone know why Jackson and Williams are out? I hate the fact that there aren’t injury reports for noncon games.

I remember Kelvin Sampson once saying: " We beat a team by 40+ that we were supposed to beat by 40+. No one should be pumping their chest out". I hate to complain when we're winning 44-0 after 3 quarters, but I have one more gripe. Why do I see important starters in the game on both sides of the ball at this stage of the game? Imagine losing someone like David Stone or Deion Banks for the Texas game because they got injured when up 44-0?

To be fair, I'll post something positive as well. The pass defense tightened up in the 3rd quarter, and the d-line has played with a lot of intensity throughout the game. We were the only FBS school who had not forced a turnover this year, and we just got two!

Most importantly, they did post an update on Keontez Lewis. All we heard was that his condition is "promising". While that's great to hear, I'll be a little more relieved when I hear that he is moving his upper body.

Next week will tell the tale. If we can’t beat those hacks, then we are frauds. I don’t think we’re a title contender yet but we have to beat those assholes.

Valid except i think it was a mistake to not play Hawkins all game and specifically make him throw.. glad to see ott wake up. But now I'm confused where x rob is and why do you not play Barnes at all (I'm not his biggest fan but if he plays next week, that'd be weird..).

Texas blows but our oline isn't great Hawkins isn't very good and wrs are still average (who honestly knows about our rbs). D is amazing. Secondary can tighten up still, but great tackling and pressure

I’m guessing they felt like there was no reason to play Barnes. He is who he is at this point and they weren’t going to learn anything about him today. They obviously wanted to see if Ott showed signs of life.

Unless they improve by leaps and bounds in seven days or just play way over their heads, I don’t have any confidence in the offense doing much next week. I know funky things happen in that game, so nothing would really shock me, but coming into the season, I expected our offense to be much further along than this. If Mateer doesn’t play, I imagine Hawkins will be a big part of the running game, which means you’re always one hit away from having your third string quarterback in the game.

I was disappointed that Gibson was a nonfactor, especially since he had to come in almost right away after Hawk almost got Lewis killed. We have heard seven months of Gibson hype, and I realize this was just his first game back, but I’m gun shy after also hearing the OU “media” talk about so many other guys who never end up doing much in the fall.

All that said, we are one of the very few teams that has managed to take care of business through five games. I still don’t think Auburn or Michigan are particularly good, and both games were at home. We will know a a lot more about this team in two or three weeks.

I think it's 50/50 if we dont have mateer bc texas is overrated anyway. I think it's 65/35 if we have mateer

Our WRs just arent elite or anything special imo.

Yea I agree. Which again is why I don’t ever trust anything the OU media report. Take Burks as an example. From the moment he transferred in, they all talked about his elite speed and how much of a big play threat he would be. He is fully healthy this season and people can’t blame it on Jackson Arnold. So, what’s the deal? He doesn’t stretch the field at all. And our offense as a whole produces almost no explosive plays, even against awful teams.

There doesn’t appear to be a great team this year. If we could play better offense, there would be no reason this team couldn’t make a decent run. But it just seems like everything is so tough for our offense.

I was somewhat disappointed in Hawkins today....we had heard great things about him coming out of fall camp. I didn't see the progress from him I expected. What's up with this sidearm bullsh!t!? His footwork is still poor and his decision making is suspect at times. The line didn't block all that great, so that didn't help either.

With Mateer, we beat Texas by 2 TDs, with Hawkins it's 50/50....ugh. I wish I was more optimistic.

I’m very disappointed with the Arbuckle offense. I’m not sure you can blame it on one factor but it simply is not very good. Even with Mateer.

What gets overlooked is that we really only upgraded at QB and scheme to a degree. Our WRs are healthy this year, but are far from anything special. OL remains a sh!show to varying degrees from week to week. Our RBs are a slight upgrade, but with DeMarco's decision making, you can't ever really count on having the best guy out there most of the time.

Defense and ST are great....so at least we have that going for us. We have a lot more grinders ahead of us this season.

I was pretty disheartened with the play of Hawkins yesterday. OL is lousy. The first TD pass is something you see out in the park after school.
Sategna is a solid player. The rest of the WRs are a giant shrug.
I've been to enough games in Dallas to expect the unexpected. We're better than them, but that's never meant much. I saw Case McCoy smoke the eventual Sugar Bowl champs.

I think a fair amount of fans recognize this, but it’s staggering how many of the people paid to cover the team spent the last several months talking up the offensive talent. I mean, if you believed those guys, you’d think we have the best WRs in the country. Tons of talk about Gibson, the Malik Nabors BS about Thomas, the continued belief that Burks is a dynamic, game-changing player, etc. And I said a few months ago that the talk of a vastly improved line was hyperbole and got a lot of grief. I think I specifically questioned whether we have any linemen who would be in the conversation for all conference and a lot of people pushed back.

The season definitely hinges on the defense and special teams. That leaves little margin for error.

I don’t think I can listen to Gabe and Teddy anymore in the off season. And they’re reasonable compared to many in the media when it comes to OU football
