This is true. But a QB can't perform poorly and have a high QBR. All I care about is a QB that improves our chances to win, which puts me in alignment with QBR.

They've said they won't punish teams for CCGs, but I won't entirely believe it until I see it.
No chance Vandy or Texas jumps them, no matter how many embarrasing excuses Sark makes on live TV. BYU is the team watch out for. If they take down Tech, they would push somebody out, with Tech staying in.
I personally would put Alabama in over ND, but hard to explain flipping those two with a loss and ND currently ranked higher.
Agree. I don’t like Mateer’s inconsistency but I still think he is a winner. I can’t put stats on it to describe it but he has competitive fire and tends to play better when he absolutely has to make plays. Yes, there are better QBs out there who are also “winners” but I don’t think we had any on last year’s team or on this year’s team.
Do I think he can lead us to a national championship? Probably not but not impossible either.
I hope he works on some basics during the off-season like throwing motion and putting air under the ball on fade patterns. But he has toughness and I like that.

He's thrown side arm or 3/4 slot since HS they said. That ain't changing.
But I agree, he can work on trajectory and some other stuff once the injury is healed this offseason. We need to be better on offense next year.

Mateer's footwork is a mess. Just seems jittery back there.
But let me say this: it was windy as hell Saturday and he put the winning TD right on the money. I know Sategna was wide-ass open, but he threw that ball 45 yards into the gale and put it right on him. It had been an offensive **** show for 55 minutes, and the gag reflex was fully initiated, but with absolutely everything on the line that ball was DELIVERED.

That busted coverage doesn't happen without the 26 yards he gained on the previous two throws allowing us to run tempo. When you get a defense on their heels like that, good things tend to happen. Most dudes spiral when they have a nightmare 3Q like he did, but he bounced back in a way that we didn't see last year. Arnold would have found a way to put that screen in the dirt and take a sack on the busted coverage.
It was a bad performance, but I don't take anything for granted after squandering away a top 10 defense last year. Until this year, that may have been our best defense since '08.
I wonder if he always threw to first base like that while playing shortstop. I have to think he made more bad throws than he should have.
Agree, it’s probably not changing but I would still like to see him work on it. I think he could remove 2-3 bad throws per game. But maybe he can just get better throwing like he throws as well. I don’t care how he does it but, like you said, we need to be better on offense and he is the QB.

The one thing we know for sure is that he knows at this point what he needs to work on. There will be a season's worth of tape and games for him to look at. Big adjustment from whatever kind of schedule he played last year to the SEC. Same for Arbuckle. I have no idea how much Mateer can grow, but even if it's just a little bit, I think we can be quite a bit better on that side of the ball.

Also, I can't help but wonder how different the game looks if a few things happen. OU dropped at least 3 catchable balls that I remember, and there was a terrible missed no-call when Burks got leveled along the sideline that should have been PI.
What if we catch two of those balls? Or what if we catch 1 of them and that PI is called?
OL could help by not committing penalties as well.
No doubt that Mateer isn’t the only one on offense who needs to get better.

It is amazing how many excuses are made for Mateer. A healed injury. The line. Drops. A new conference. Referees. And I listen to some of the homers like Drumm suggest that all his flaws (horrible footwork, crappy sidearm motion, not reading defenses) can be fixed. Dude is in his fourth year of college. He has been a fulltime starter for two years. He has spent multiple years with this OC and in this system. He is who he is at this point. Sure, he can and should make incremental improvement, but this isn't a raw freshman. If he and his OC haven't figured out how to fix his feet and throwing motion in three years, why trust that it will happen in the future? And as for the "he needs time to adjust to the SEC," why? All sorts of guys have success in leagues like the SEC and Big 10 after transferring in, or in some cases, as freshmen or first-year starters.
Would it help Mateer if he had NFL skill players around him? Sure. Would that make him suddenly more accurate, or able to read a defense? Would his arm angle suddenly be higher?
We are winning in spite of our offense as a whole and our QB in particular. People want to say he is a "gamer," or that he does enough to win. Well, if a starting pitcher gets bombed for 7 runs in two innings before getting pulled, and the team ends up winning 12-10, did the starter "do enough to win," or did he get bailed out by his teammates? If a QB constantly misses throws and turns the ball over, but his defense gets stop after stop (and in some cases, scores themselves), and the team wins low-scoring games, all it means is that the team is good enough in other areas to overcome crappy QB play.

I think a lot of that has to do with the type of sports fan one is or isn't. For me, looking at our schedule, I was expecting 8-4 and hoping for 9-3. To go 10-2 has me more or less frolicking in daisies so I'm willing to let most anything go. I don't think Mateer's been very good, I remember Heisman talk after Michigan and Auburn somewhere in this thread and it floored me, but he's the unquestioned offensive leader of a team that has far exceeded my expectations. So while there are lots of things about his play that drives me bananas, I can also check back into big-time runs he made in our victories that helps paint a rosier picture of his performance.
To each his own. Mateer seems like a really good kid. I had my fill of all the circus surrounding Arnold pretty early last year, and I felt like the program took a few hits by bending over backward to please his family. But that team found ways to lose, so there's nothing there to produce a smile when I go to the memory bank.
To close this rambling missive, let me just say that a great defense always gives you a chance. 17-13 wins are much easier on the eyes than a 50-48 shootout. Let's just get the running game going a little bit.

I fully agree with 04 that exceeding expectations and winning games help me digest a lot of Mateer's mistakes easier. And a big reason for this team's success is that the chemistry is great, and John is the glue for that on the offensive side. Players and coaches have repeatedly talked about their belief in him.
However, I don't think that understanding the reality of this offense is the same as making excuses for him. He's working with receivers who very rarely get separation, an offensive line that generates no holes for a run game, a RB room that is a disaster outside of X, and tight ends (god bless em) who really struggle to block anything. The generational QB talents we've had around here lately may have been good enough to overcome all of that, but Mateer is good but not great enough to succeed with little consistent help. His footwork and decision making in the RPO leave a lot (a LOT!) to be desired, but I'm not sure there's more than a couple of QBs in the nation who could lead this offense to 10-2.

I'm greedy bc I wonder how good our offense and team overall could be with a Heisman quality QB like we had an incredible run with that had terrible defenses.. I'm not looking for a little bit of growth.
But sadly I've been told that we have no plans to move on from mateer and will not be looking for a starter quality QB to bring in for competition. It'll be mateer again (unless he wants to move elsewhere for some reason). Ou gonna ou.

I will defend landry Jones until the day I die. One of the most underrated QBs ever in not only ou history, but college football
If I’m going to put blame on any other unit besides the quarterback it’s the offensive line. Even Riley’s offense struggled when they couldn’t establish the run. A solid run game takes a tonne of pressure off the QB.
I don’t have a huge issue with the skill player units. I think Xrob and Blaylock are a fine 1-2 punch and the receiving room is good enough for better offensive production.
I also think Arbuckle has underutilized Kanak. He’s not your traditional TE but I’m surprised by the lack of creativity with him.
