Football question

Now that Hawkins is officially in the portal, I wonder what level of portal QB we will get. Unfortunately I bet it’s a G5 guy who isn’t good enough to take a meaningful snap for us, let alone push our mediocre starter.

This increases the odds that Mateer will just be anointed the starter again. Nobody to push him for the job.

I know people will act like it’s nothing, but losing two or three guys today who absolutely would have been contributors next year isn’t a great sign. Most the transfers aren’t a big deal, but a few have been and our depth is taking a beating unless we add quality pieces. For people who gave me crap when I downplayed the culture talk, this is why. We are like most programs … guys will leave if they see more money or playing time elsewhere. They aren’t sticking around just because of the culture.

What starter or would be starter has left? People leaving for playing time, guys who haven’t contributed probably taking pay cuts, or looking for pay increases.

That’s not a cause for concern at all & definitely isn’t a knock on the culture.

Starters aren’t the only key players. We rotated tons on the defensive line all season and just lost a guy who certainly would have been in the rotation next season. And we lost a DB who made a huge play for us in the Bama win and also would have been an important piece for multiple years.

And what has been the refrain for a million years on the O Line? We need more depth. Every year people make that argument. Well, we have lost a couple guys who would have fit the bill. So now we will have to spend on multiple portal guys, in addition to hopefully finding a starter quality lineman.

And I didn’t knock our culture. I said we are his like everyone else.

Who are you referring to?

When guys like Ewers are getting offered 8M to withdraw from the draft, you simply can't afford more than one veteran and one young guy to groom. We swapped out Hawkins for Bentley. I would not want to drop 1M on a QB2 when that same money gets you an all-american defender. G5 project is the better economical decision.

To get a younger QB willing to sit a year behind Mateer but also good enough to push him and become our starter next year, it would cost 1-2M.

To put it in perspective, I said early on our top priorities in the portal were Wein, Kip, and Sategna. That 1-2M is likely enough of a payraise to keep all 3. Easy decision.

OU lost no key players that weren’t hurt all the time. OU will 100% bring in someone better than Marcus Strong to be DT3. OU will bring in just as many transfers as it loses & the guys they are losing I guarantee they’ll win the portal trade off.

If we lost our QB Hoover, or maybe the 2nd best WR in the country Cam Coleman then I’d be worried. Not losing 1 projected starter in this day & age speaks volumes.

Sategna aside, we don’t have a great track record of hitting on offensive transfers. And on defense we have usually only needed to bring in one or two guys a year. That’s not the case this season, so we will find out.

strong is the only departure that's disappointing so far...
he would have been a big rotation piece next season....makes no sense to leave
he's one play away from starting.
he's been in the system.....there's no guarantee we get someone better....knowing stone/jackson will be the starters

Nah you're blowing this up bc you're always negative. Every team will be and is going through the exact same thing

How’s that not the case this season? I see OU needing 1 starter on defense, 2 if Kip leaves.

Except other teams are losing actual starters, OU hasn’t lost a starter yet. Also OU making the playoffs is going to make them all the more alluring.

Again, you keep saying starters. Football teams don’t play 11 guys on offense and 11 on defense. Like I said, the second we have our annual offensive line injury parade, the excuses will start. Hell, on this board this season there were people saying “if only Sexton and Taylor were available” when our line was struggling. We stayed healthy on defense for the most part but that’s not always going to happen. Losing two guys in one day who absolutely would have been in the rotation matters.

If Kip leaves and Owen doesn’t get a waiver, we will need to replace our top 3 linebackers. We already needed to replace 2 of our 4 rotational defensive tackles and now we lost a guy who would have at least been in the mix for playing time.

I’m not saying we are screwed. All I said is that this just shows that we are in the same boat as other teams, despite everyone acting like we have a roster of guys who would jump through a wall for Brent. And don’t forget we had a running back who had gotten more than fair treatment for four year literally quit on his team in the middle of a playoff run. Barnes started games every season he was at OU and likely would have started the last two regular season games given the injuries to X and Blaylock, but he quit.
