Football question

Again, you keep saying starters. Football teams don’t play 11 guys on offense and 11 on defense. Like I said, the second we have our annual offensive line injury parade, the excuses will start. Hell, on this board this season there were people saying “if only Sexton and Taylor were available” when our line was struggling. We stayed healthy on defense for the most part but that’s not always going to happen. Losing two guys in one day who absolutely would have been in the rotation matters.

If Kip leaves and Owen doesn’t get a waiver, we will need to replace our top 3 linebackers. We already needed to replace 2 of our 4 rotational defensive tackles and now we lost a guy who would have at least been in the mix for playing time.

I’m not saying we are screwed. All I said is that this just shows that we are in the same boat as other teams, despite everyone acting like we have a roster of guys who would jump through a wall for Brent. And don’t forget we had a running back who had gotten more than fair treatment for four year literally quit on his team in the middle of a playoff run. Barnes started games every season he was at OU and likely would have started the last two regular season games given the injuries to X and Blaylock, but he quit.

barnes didn't really quit....he just got greedy
wanted another year paid

strong is the only departure that's disappointing so far...
he would have been a big rotation piece next season....makes no sense to leave
he's one play away from starting.
he's been in the system.....there's no guarantee we get someone better....knowing stone/jackson will be the starters
Strong wants to start and can probably make more money elsewhere. That’s the rub. It’s hard to keep guys that can start elsewhere. We can’t pay everyone like a starter. It sucks but it’s the reality for everyone.

the money we had for halton/williams/stone/jackson apparently was good enough to keep them around...
why not strong? what level of team will give him starter money...and will it be that much more than he would have gotten at ou?
i guess we'll find out soon enough

I mean, that’s exactly what he did. His motive was money, yes, but he absolutely quit. He was healthy weeks before the season ended, his team needed him, and he chose not to play. That’s quitting. And it cuts against the argument that our culture is somehow superior to others. Like I said, I’m not saying ours is bad. It’s just the same as most places.

In other news, man Miami was impressive. I had wondered how we would have looked against them, but their defensive line would have manhandled us.

You do know OU will get transfers as well right?

DL - Okoye/PJ, Stone, Jackson, Wein
LB - Lewis, Omosigho, Powers
DB - Bowen, Bowen, bogdanowski, Guilloury

They literally have a very solid starting lineup right now. Then will have a ton of $ available to upgrade a starter or 2, & build depth everywhere.

3 star who cares. I hope we can replace his 11 2 and 1

Every single one of those guys has proven on the field they are above average conference starters, with about half showing all-american potential. That's an absolutely insane roster to have prior to any transfer portal additions.

Not only is that not factoring in transfers, but it's also not factoring returning reserves or freshmen. As funny as it is that people don't think we can replace a guy like Daniels in the portal, when he literally was a portal addition last year, it's next level hilarity that people think one of the greatest LB coaches of all time can't replace a former walk-on that was sparingly used for several years. With the added layer that he may even get an extra year of eligibility.

Complaining about the state of this defense cannot be explained beyond personality disorder.

Barnes was one of the most highly rated recruits in the country and spent 4 years here despite under performing and only now entered the portal. Using that as an insult to our culture, which is quality that continues to allude you, is a desperation heave at best.

What about Stutsman returning?
What about Bowman returning?
What about Burks returning?
What about RMT returning?
What about Wein returning?
What about the discussion that Kip and Sategna are strongly considering returning?

Even elite programs like Alabama and Georgia have lost starters. Outside of DG for his 6th year, I think Green is the only starter we ever lost. When we identify a crucial player, we do a better job than anybody in the country at retaining them. Even when it's considered against all odds like some of the above.

i'm OK with Hawkins in the portal. he looked terrible in his one start (I still don't understand this side arm throw thing). I wanted to like the guy as a legacy and the rumors he was better than Arnold coming out of camp last year. I will root for him wherever he goes.

I thought we beat Navy with our B team easy if we keep running the ball instead of Arbuckle (who I am giving a chance, still)....trying to show something. and dropped balls by our WRs unused to success in 2024.

I am not going to beat on Arbuckle but I thought this O was supposed to give a lot of catches/touches to a buncha guys. Basically, all year we are Sategna and sometimes predictable Kanak or Burks. and a few important catches late in the season to jer micheal carter. who is getting open because he isn't Satengna.

Lincoln Riley can F off until the sun doesn't come up and I loved his usual 4th Q choke against the frogs..... but he knew how to use a guy like Lee Morris or Dmitri Flowers or Nick Basquine on off side of plays.

I'm confused how you think this it's a distinction

ott quit. he was healthy...it was his last year of eligibility.....we desperately needed him...and he flat out refused to play
the barnes situation is one we'll likely see every season...(how many of the o-linemen that are transferring did the same thing as barnes)......players trying to preserve a redshirt so they can get paid another year. a bunch of wide receivers did it last season.
the ncaa needs to give everyone 5 years. players shouldn't be paid big money for 4 games.

we have a good group of starters everywhere except linebacker.
but the defense is only as good as the backups and currently we don't know much about those.
bv can bring in all the transfers he wants and it doesn't guarantee they'll play like starters should....especially at linebacker.
mccullough was a highly touted transfer that had little impact....so u never know until you see them on the field in september.

like every oc...arbuckle's offense is only as good as his qb.
and we saw how a manic qb like mateer hinders an offense ....in the playoff game.
the offense looked like a well oiled machine until he threw the pick6.....then he reverted back to what we saw most of the season.
terrible decisions/fundamentals/technique...

If Kip returns, we are fine at LB.

Not true at all.

and currently we don't know much about those.

We didn't know anything about Heinecke until this year. Or at least we didn't know anything that inspired confidence.

I just can't. LBer has never been an issue for BV in a quarter century. I don't know how you could possibly be worried about that, especially if we return one of the best LBs in the country.

They're both quitting

Very very naive take here. You know what else was never an issue for OU before the era of NIL and transfers? Quarterback, running back and tight end. And now they’re the three biggest issues on the entire team.
Now, do you I think LB will be the problem next year? No, I don’t. But to just assume that linebacker will never be a problem for BV just because he’s BV is incredibly naive in this era of college football.

Nobody worried about offense under Riley for obvious reasons. The same logic applies to the best defensive mind in CFB. It’s not hard to see the logic in that thinking

A couple things that stand out watching the quarterfinals so far. Those teams last night had tons of high draft picks on the field. And Oregon has a bunch of true freshmen skill players who not only play, but play huge roles. Next year, I’m going to be interested to see if Eli Thomas does much at WR. If not, then all the hype about him was clearly just talk. If so, I will always wonder why he didn’t see the field on offense this year when we were so lacking at WR other than Sategna.
